I woke up, alone. I quickly sat up, and swung my head around a little too fast. "Ow.." I said, taking in a sharp breath. I was still at home, that was a good sign, yet no sign of Bret. I pulled myself off of the couch, soda cans, and two semi empty bags of popcorn lay on the table. I walked into the kitchen only to be met by a all too familiar face. Drew. He was just sitting there, having a cup of, what resembled, coffee.
"What the hell are you doing here? How did you get in?" He smirked at me, and stood up. He was walking closer to me, which made me take a couple steps backward. "Didn't you read the note, love?" He tried to reach for me, but I slapped his hand away. "One, don't call me that. Ever. Two, what note?" He walked over to the kitchen counter, and picked up a piece of paper. A note from Bret.
Em,
It's about a quarter till' one and you're still sleeping! Get up! No, I'm completely kidding, sleep if you want. Anyway, I have to do some running around, go see my family since I've been staying with you. I won't be home until probably later tonight, okay? I stopped at the store first thing when I woke up, so there is stuff in the fridge for you. Love you, and be careful! Text me before you go and run off again, yeah? -Bret x
"Okay, that answers why I woke up alone, but how did you get in here?" I crossed my arms, and slouched to one leg. My other one still hurt a little. Drew held up a simple screwdriver, and a safety pin. "You picked the lock? You broke into my own house? How low are you, honestly." I scoffed.
He dropped the tools, my eyes widened. He came at me fairly quick, I backed up. He grabbed my waist, and pushed me to the wall. I was in shock, just staring in his eyes. He was angry, and I was scarred for my life. "What was I supposed to do." He hissed. "You were ignoring me last night, and I wanted to know where you went. What you were up to." He got closer to me, right by my neck. "Who you were with." A mere whisper, that if a pin had dropped, you wouldn't have heard him. I shoved him, something he wasn't expecting, so he was off of me in an instant. "Do you realize how crazy you sound? Really? If you haven't noticed, God only knows why you can be this stupid, the world, let me rephrase, MY world doesn't revolve around you. You can't always have me with you. I'm sure as hell not going to be there much anymore. Drew I do, a little less now, have feelings for you. What's wrong? Why do you do these outrageous things? I honestly don't understand how you can be so brutal to someone." He looked as though he was ready to cry. I was too. I held it in though, I've cried enough, it's someone elses' turn.
"Emily, you wouldn't understand." He wiped his eyes, for a second I thought I saw a simple tear. Maybe it was just my imagination. "What do you think I wouldn't understand? About you're parents? Body appearance? Been there, dealing with that." I tried to make it sound as soft and caring as I could. Even a little voice crack happened. "Emily, please. That isn't any of your business." He was getting ready to walk out the door, until I did what he's always done to me. The wrist grasp. I turned him around, making him face me whether he liked it or not. "Did you really just say that? That it's simply 'none of your business'? Who does that sound like? Does that ring a bell? How about my life is none of your business! You are always asking me where I am, what am I doing, who I'm with, and now the tables have turned. I've never hurt you. Even after everything that you have done to me, it's complete bullshit! I should have stood up for myself, I should have done something to make you stop wanting to hurt me, but I didn't. Would you like to know why? Because I actually care about people! I don't want to hurt them! I want them to feel safe and to be happy! What do you want? You want people to suffer because you aren't happy with something." I let go of his wrist, and backed away, a tiny step.
"Emily." He collapsed to the floor, completely letting himself go. Not a care. "Drew!" His back was to the wall, knees to his chest, and his face in his hands. I got down beside him, wrapping my arms around his middle, and rocking him. "Get away! Just leave Emily, I'm not safe for you! I can't make you happy! I just fuck everything up, and I can't be with you!" He punched the wall, and kept fighting me. I just held on to him tighter, and kept kissing his hair as he just sat there in hysterics.
After what seemed like an eternity, he calmed down. He spoke in his groggy, raspy voice that has followed with me all through middle and high school. "Emily, I'm so sorry. I hate letting you see me like this. I'm a complete mess, and I don't want to bring you down with me." He layed his head on my shoulder, and I layed my head on his. "We can be messes together. It's okay to cry, Drew. It even happens to the best of people." He looked up, having me move my head. He looked right into my eyes, and then leaned in. My first kiss.
It was slow and smooth, his tongue wasn't launched down my throat, but it was there. Plump, pink, and perfect.
