The next morning I woke to the small dragons snorting and nudging my cheek. For models of cold-blooded killers, they sure were affectionate.

I rubbed their heads a bit before spotting the golden egg.

I sat up and pulled it into my lap, where I began to examine it.

There was nothing spectacular about the thing. It was simply gold and smooth, save the three ridges indicating that it opened.

Without stopping to think, I pried the egg open.

A horrid shriek filled the silent morning air, emanating from the small, glowing orb in the centre of the egg.

After a bit of effort, I managed to slam the thing closed, silencing it.

"Dear Merlin! What was that?" cried Madame Pomfrey, hurrying in the room.

"Just my clue, Madame. Sorry, I didn't know it would do that," I replied sheepishly, putting it back on the table.

"You know, that sounded rather like mermish..." she trailed off, looking quickly in my direction. "I don't know. Maybe it's just me."

I smiled softly, catching on. She was trying to help without breaking the rules.

"Maybe," I said, feigning ignorance.

She smiled at me and winked, then hurried back to her office.

"So it's got something to do with mermaids, does it?" I thought, examining the egg again. "I guess this means I need to put it in water...but how?"

Madame Pomfrey let me go later that afternoon, with strict orders to do nothing that could stress on my arm.

I hurried off to find Hermione.

"Herman, I need your help," I said quietly once I had found her.

She stayed silent for a moment. "You did not just call me Herman."

I sighed. "I need your help in a life or death matter, but you care more about me nicknaming you. I guess I'll go find Crystal and get her help."

Hermione glared. "No, I'll help you."

I grinned. "Thanks! And really, it's your fault for answering to it."

She smiled a bit, but hid it quickly.

"What do you need help with?" she asked.

"I need you to stand guard."

"What for?"

"I need to go underwater."

"Where?"

"The Black Lake."

"WHAT?!"

"The egg, it's in mermish. It's only words underwater, so I need someplace I can go under water with it. A sink won't work, and the only bath big enough is prefects only."

"You can't go in the Black Lake!"

"Hermes, if the clue is under water, the challenge probably is too. I'm going to end up in the Lake no matter what."

"Why do you need me?"

"Do you want me to drown, Herm girl?"

"Well, no, but-"

"Then I need you there to bring me up if I don't on my own after two minutes."

She sighed. "Fine. But I don't like this at all."

"Love you 'Mione," I smiled.

"I know you love me."

"Conceited much?"

"Hush you."

I laughed, and she lead the way out of the castle.

"How long do I wait to pull you up?" She asked several minutes later as we stood at the edge of the water.

"Two minutes."

And with that, I tucked the egg under my arm and began to climb everyone's favourite tree.
