Hearts can only handle so much weight before they sink.
she knew not of the dumbbells that sat
at her heart's core; heavy with agony and anger.

she knew not of her own wretched thoughts
drowning in an unmerciful sea;
salty waves crashing and clawing at her.

she knew not of the light at arm's length
for her dark aura blinded her.

fragile strands of wispy hair hung loose
tears rising like ocean waves threatening to spill
she came crashing down like a sandcastle
but her inability to explain the storms that raged inside her
drove her to give up and tugged at the corners of her lips
forming happiness; creating rainbows out of mud;

They pretended not to notice and
then they wondered why she drowned.
