Not only is today the last day of school for us seniors but it's also Tyler's birthday. So his cousin, Steven, and I planned a surprise party. Although it's not really a surprise anymore. Once we started inviting people, the entire school began talking about it. I know Tyler knows about it but he hasn't mentioned it which has made me happy.
Steven made me promise to 'chill' tonight. Apparently I'm not cool enough because I'm the mature one. But he's right. I've lived every moment of my life carefully but tonight I'm gonna let go and have fun. I'm really excited because I know it will make Tyler happy and that's what he needs on his birthday.
We're having the party at a warehouse on the outskirts of town. Steven paid for a DJ and some party supplies. I think it will be fun - even with the whole senior class there. Although the lack of clothing will be scary. Just looking at myself in the mirror makes my eyes widen.
I am decorated in a tight red dress and matching red heels. My hair isn't in its usually ponytail. Instead I let it down and straightened it. I spent an hour on my makeup just for tonight. I hope that he likes it.
I straighten my dress and take a deep breath. "You look great." Another girl in the bathroom says.
I smile slightly. "Thanks."
"No problem."
Steven should be on his way with Tyler. In fact, they should be here by now. As I leave the bathroom and push my way through the crowd, I look around in hope of finding them. "You look great. Want to dance?" Some random guy asks.
"Uh...I'm actually looking for someone." I say.
"The party has just started, they'll still be here. Just a quick dance."
Steven's voice plays in the back of my mind.
Chill.
I give in, allowing the stranger to take my hand. It changes to a popular Spanish song and I actually let go and dance freely with this complete stranger. His front presses against my behind and he places his hands on my hips as they sway back and forth. The song is over before I know it and I smile before looking around. "Can I get you a drink?"
"Yeah." I reply just as I spot Tyler and Steven. "Meet me over there."
He nods before walking away. I make my way towards Tyler with a small smile playing on my lips. "Happy birthday!"
He smiles at me but it quickly fades when he looks me over. I shift uncomfortably as his eyes widen. "Damn, Mia. You did this for me?" Steven asks.
I glare at him. "I did it for me." I snap. "I want to have fun tonight."
"Come home with me and I'll make sure that happens." Steven grins, winking at me.
I flip him off and Tyler punches him really hard. "Don't be a dick. Make yourself useful and get me a drink."
Steven wanders off and Tyler takes a deep breath. When he opens his mouth to speak, he is interrupted by the guy I danced with. "Here's your drink."
I smile up at him. "Thanks."
"No problem."
He glances at Tyler and they glare at each other. "This is Tyler." I say, realizing I don't even know this guys name.
"I'm Jeremy." The guy says.
"How do you know each other?" Tyler asks, glancing between us.
"We danced a few minutes ago." Jeremy shrugs.
Tyler nods sightly. "Well she owes me a birthday dance, so she'll catch up with you later."
Grabbing my hand, Tyler pulls me into the crowd of dancing people. I shoot Jeremy an apologetic look and he shrugs. "That was rude." I say, glaring at Tyler.
He shrugs. "Whatever. It's my party. Dance with me."
I hold up my drink. Rolling his eyes, he finishes off my drink and drops the plastic cup to the floor. His hands find my hips and he pulls me against him. He's acting so odd tonight. Usually he's all over the women but for some reason, I've earned his attention tonight.
When the song is over, Steven interrupts us. "Your cake is coming out. Come on."
Tyler holds onto my hand as we make our way through the crowd. We reach the back wall where there's a old couch waiting. We sit down and Tyler pulls me onto his lap. Before I can question him, a bunch of girls start singing happy birthday. A huge cake makes it's way through the crowd and my eyes widen. I know exactly what it is. No matter how hard I try to get away, Tyler doesn't allow it. "Calm down." He whispers.
When the song comes to an end, the cake comes to a halt in front of us. Two girls who look to be in their early twenties pop out from the top of the cake. The only thing they wear is matching bikinis. With help of a couple guys, the climb out. I get away while Tyler is distracted. The two girls take my place on his lap and I'm soon forgotten.
While Tyler stays there doing the unimaginable, I go and find Jeremy. We spend the rest of the night dancing with an occasional drink break. It's not until almost three in the morning that I find Tyler and Steven again. "Steven, I'm ready to go home."
"Why are you telling him?" Tyler asks.
"He's taking me home."
Tyler raises his eyebrows. "No he's not. I'll take you."
"You don't trust me?" Steven laughs.
"No." Tyler replies. "I'm taking her."
"Fine." Steven leans in and kisses my temple. "Thanks for helping me plan this."
"No problem."
Tyler looks irritated but says nothing. He takes my hand and leads the way to his truck. After opening and closing my door, he gets in and begins driving me home. "Won't you get in trouble for being out so late?" He asks when we get to my house.
"No. My parents are out of town visiting family."
"Why didn't you tell me?" He asks.
I shrug. "It wasn't important."
"You can stay with me." He offers.
I shake my head. "I'll be fine."
He sighs. "I'll walk you to your door."
