I clear my throat wide-eyed. "Uh... I'm sorry."
Tyler's dad nods slowly. "I don't want any part of your drama with Tyler. Come on."
He waves me out of the room then closes the door behind me. "I'm so sorry. I had no right."
"Don't worry about it. Your mother is probably wondering where you are."
I nod then go downstairs. Alex grabs my hand when he sees me. "I'm tired, momma."
"We can go." My mom says.
"Oh, let me grab that recipe for you real quick." Tyler's mother says.
"We'll be outside." I tell my mom.
I put Alex in his car seat and buckle him before getting in. As I scroll through some pictures on my phone, I come across a picture of Matt. He's just what I need right now. I dial his number and wait for him to answer. "Hey baby girl." He says happily.
Just the sound of his voice makes my eyes water. "Are you busy?" I ask.
"Kind of. Why? What's up?" I sniffle, trying to stay strong. "What's wrong?" He asks quietly.
"I'm pregnant with Tyler's baby." I cry. "And my central air is broke."
He chuckles. "Everything will be okay. I'll have your air fixed within an hour. As for the pregnancy thing, we might have to talk a little later. I'm in the middle of a meeting and your on speakerphone."
I sniffle, my cheeks burning with embarrassment. "Oh. Call me later."
I quickly hang up, feeling stupid. I wipe away my tears before my mother gets in the car. She begins driving then glances at me. "Do you want to go home or do you want to come over for spaghetti?"
"Home."
"Spaghetti!" Alex screams from the backseat.
My mom chuckles. "He can come over if it's okay with you. I'll drop him off tomorrow night."
I nod. "He needs clothes. I'll run up and get him some."
She pulls into my driveway and parks the car. "No need. I bought him a few things for when he spends the night."
After saying goodbye, I kiss Alex before going inside. Once I'm inside, I go to my bay window seat and lay across it. I watch the sky as it changes from blue to a pinkish orange color as the sun begins to set. When I hear a knock at the door, I get up and answer it. "Hi, I'm Tom. I'm here to fix the air."
"Sure. Come in."
I take him to the thermostat and explain to him what happened. When I return to the living room, I find Matt on the couch. "You really should lock your door."
"Matt!"
He stands up to give me a hug then pulls away, placing a hand on my stomach. "How could you go this long without telling me? I'm hurt." He pouts.
"I'm sorry." I frown. "But if I knew it'd get you here that quick I would've told you sooner. How did you get here so quick?"
"I was in the area." He shrugs.
"You were already here when I called?" I ask
"I was only a few states away. It's a quick trip in a jet." He smiles.
I roll my eyes. "Show off."
He sits down on the couch and pulls me down next to him. "Now start at the beginning and tell me everything."
So I do. I tell him everything. I cry. I yell. But eventually he knows every little detail about what has happened since I last spoke to him. He stays quiet until I'm done. "So you didn't want to have a baby? You only agreed because he said he loved you?"
I sigh. "I was too blinded by his words to care much about anything else."
"Well are you keeping it?" He asks.
"Of course." I answer automatically. "It's still my child. I'm already a single mother. Two kids won't hurt anything."
He frowns. "Did you ever think about actually talking to him and giving him another chance?"
"After I found that stuff in his room?" I ask in disbelief.
"You guys aren't technically dating so he isn't completely in the wrong."
I shake my head. "We promised that we wouldn't see anyone while I was pregnant though. He's the one who came up with that idea."
He sighs. "You two have got to be the most complicated people in the world."
I glare at him. "You're supposed to comfort me."
"No." He says slowly. "I'm supposed to help you. You're making it hard. If we can't figure things out tonight, I'm flying my mother in."
I sigh. "No, don't do that."
"I don't think I have a choice."
I bite my lip at I look down, thinking. "What if I tell him we should only see each other for appointments and the baby's birth? Is that good?"
He raises his eyebrows. "Would you actually be able to follow through with it?"
I shrug. "I think so."
He nods. "Okay. You guys need to sit down together in a public place so either of you can run away at any time. You need to talk to him about things then give him the news."
"What would I do without you?" I smile.
"I don't know." He breathes.
Putting his arm around me, he pulls me to his side for a hug.
Matt sleeps on the couch and I go to my room. I dial Tyler's number and sit on the bed. "Hey Mia." He answers. "Is everything okay?"
"I'm at my mom's. I'm staying over tonight so don't worry about coming over." I lie.
"Okay." He says slowly. "I guess I'll go home."
"Do you want to meet up for lunch tomorrow?" I ask.
"Sure. When and where?"
"Cecilia's on the corner of Elm and Main." I say. "Is noon good?"
"Yeah. I'll see you then."
I hang up and walk over to my dresser to get pajamas. When I see someone walking outside, I look closer. I watch as Tyler climbs back into his truck and drives away. He knew I was lying.
