An old fairy who everybody thinks is dead gets all huffy because nobody invited her to the new princess's christening. So the old fairy curses the princess to eventually prick her finger on a needle and die. Luckily, another fairy is there to help out with magic of her own: The princess won't die, just sleep for 100 years. Since that would mean everybody she ever knew would be dead when she woke up, the fairy puts everybody else to sleep for 100 years too. Then a prince comes along at just the right time and gets to feel like he saved the day.
