A shoemaker has no money and only enough leather for one pair of shoes. He cuts it and leaves it out only to find the shoes completed in the morning. This sort of thing goes on a bit, and it turns out some elves are sneaking in and doing the work at night. They're really good at making shoes too, much better than the shoemaker. They really turn his business around, so he and his wife make the elves some clothes to thank them. Apparently, that was all the elves wanted in the first place. They never come back after that, presumably leaving the shoemaker to do a crappy job again and disappoint his new customers.
