Way back a long time ago, these trolls had a mirror that distorted everything to show only bad stuff. They tried to bring it up to Heaven, but it fell and shattered into tiny pieces, which got into people's eyes and made them see only the bad in everything. One such unfortunate boy goes off with the Snow Queen, and everybody thinks he's dead. Luckily, his friend doesn't have any of those mirror splinters in her eyes, so she's able to save him.
So basically, exactly like Disney's Frozen.
