Milly's POV

Milly took one last look inside the small café before she punched in the alarm code, its shrill warning call pierced her ears and she shut the door as quickly as she could, locking it behind her. She turned and began making her way back to her apartment. It wasn't far, just a few blocks away. She had been lucky to land a job so close by. She wondered how her mother was doing. Lately it had seemed like she'd been getting worse, and Milly didn't know what else she could do. She couldn't afford to hire a home carer, but she knew the time was coming when she would have to take her back to the hospital. She didn't like thinking about losing her mother; she was the only family she had left. However, the thought lingered at the back of her mind, weighing her down with a heaviness she knew she could never lift.

Taking out her phone, she saw that she had a message from an unknown number. She opened it and saw that it was from Sophie. She'd had her phone stolen. Typical.. Milly thought. She replied quickly before closing the app and opening Spotify. She plugged in her earphones and tapped on her new favourite song, Run by AWOLNATION. She found it so odd that she liked this type of music, considering the usual suspects in her playlists were Fall Out Boy, Blink-182 and other similar artists. As the music filled her ears, she took in a deep breath, holding it for a few seconds before letting it out, feeling some of the tension in her body leave with it. She maintained her conversation with Sophie, agreeing to meet up some time in the next couple of days, depending on her shifts at the café. Milly liked Sophie. She was the first person in a long time that made her feel like she wasn't alone. She smiled to herself, remembering their meeting the day before, and their endless fits of laughter. How she had missed being able to laugh without feeling guilty for it.

A few streets away from her flat, there was a bar that while wasn't usually extremely popular, seemed unusually busy that evening. Must be a football match on or something, Milly muttered to herself, preparing to cross the road to avoid the few stumbling drunkards who had already managed to get themselves thrown out, and were now bellowing at the closed door, pleading with whoever was on the other side to let them back in. When the road was clear, Milly hurried across to the other side of the street and continued walking with her head down, hoping she wouldn't be seen. The place had a reputation for being unfriendly to the female species. Unfortunately for her, she had been seen. One of the drunk men began walking towards her, crossing the street without even looking for traffic. It was already dark, being well into December now, the usual rush of people on the street noticeably absent. Milly heard the man coming before she saw him. He was moving fairly fast for someone as intoxicated as he first appeared to be. She quickened her pace, but it was futile, as the man called out to her.

'Milly.'

She froze. She knew that voice. It haunted her days, tormented her nights. She had hoped she would never hear it again. Slowly, she turned around, wincing as her eyes fell on the man's face. A part of her wished she was mistaken, that she was hearing things, and that the man stood before her was not who she knew it was. 'Alex.' She breathed. 'Fancy seeing you here.' She kept her tone light, trying not to show her fear. She knew the moment she did, he would be on her and there would be no running from him then. He grunted at her, moving forward a few steps, closing the distance between them. Milly had to stop herself from backing away as he advanced. 'Milly..' He reached an arm out to her, and this time she couldn't refrain from flinching away from his touch.

Where his fingers had grazed her arm, her skin burned. He scowled at her, moving forward so fast she barely had time to react before her arms were pinned to her sides, his face inches away from hers. 'What's wrong, sweet? Not trying to leave are we?' He slurred. Milly turned her head away, wrinkling her nose as his hot, alcoholic breath brushed over her face. He pressed his head into her neck, and she fought the urge to throw up as his lips touched her skin. Inside she was screaming at herself to get him off, but her body was frozen in place, unable to obey her minds commands. She thought of her mother, waiting for her in her apartment.

Something in her snapped. Her right leg came up fast and hard, hitting her attacker between his legs. A cry burst from his mouth and he stumbled away from her, holding himself. Free of his grip, she took her opportunity and ran. Her feet pounded on the pavement, carrying her down the last few streets to her home. Reaching the door, she fumbled with her keys to find the right one before shoving it in the lock and turning. Slipping inside, she slammed the door behind her and leant against it, her breathing heavy; her heart racing. Tears began falling onto her cheeks and she swiftly wiped them away with her sleeve, swallowing the lump that had formed in her throat. She turned and slid the deadbolt across the door, before making her way up the stairs to her apartment door.

As she climbed, she contemplated calling Sophie and telling her what had just happened. She knew her mother wouldn't understand. She barely knew herself these days. She decided against it as she let herself in, throwing her keys on the counter on her left. Taking off her jacket, she hung it on the empty hook on the back of the door. Then she moved almost robotically into her own room, stripping off her clothes and pulling on a fresh pair of pyjamas. Climbing into her bed, she hugged her pillow tightly to her chest. This time when the tears filled her eyes, she didn't stop them streaming down her face. Huge sobs wracked her chest and she screamed into her pillow, afraid that the uncontrollable noise would wake her mother. For what seemed like an age, she cried, releasing all the pent up misery she had hidden away that had slowly crept underneath her skin. Then, finally, when her eyes ran dry and her breathing began to slow, she drifted into dreamless sleep. One thing she knew, she was not going to work tomorrow.
