Milly's POV

Milly called the waitress over and ordered herself a coffee as Sophie explained her situation. She couldn't believe what she was hearing, considering what she already knew about her and her brother's relationship. 'So yeah, now I'm pretty much staying there until I go back to uni just after New Year's.' Sophie finished with a sigh, swirling her now cold drink around in her cup, staring at the chocolate powder left at the bottom. 'So he just called you and kicked you out? Just like that?' Milly asked incredulously. I'm gonna kill that kid... The threat echoed around her head and she felt her grip around her cup tighten. Sophie nodded solemnly, obviously trying not to cry in front of so many people. Milly had a feeling that she'd be doing the same even if they were alone.

'So. Simon then?' Sophie asked curiously, leaning towards her in anticipation. Milly felt her stomach flip at the mention of his name and blushed, looking down at her hands. 'Yeah. That's a good story actually.' She trailed off, remembering the previous night.
'Are you gonna tell it then or keep going red until you look like a tomato?' Sophie teased her, nudging her arm. Milly looked up at her, taking in a deep breath. 'Well, last night I had to take my mum into hospital and I ended up staying there pretty late; into the early hours of the morning. I'd still be there if I didn't have to work, and then I had to see you after. Don't get me wrong, I don't want you to go; I need this down time as it were, it's just a bit stressful at the minute.' Sophie's face crumpled into a worried frown.

'Why didn't you tell me before? I would have totally understood if you wanted to go straight there instead of hanging around with me.' Milly stopped her before she could go on. 'It's okay, honestly. There's nothing much I can do just sitting by her bedside. She barely remembers who I am anymore.' She paused, blinking to fight the all-too-familiar tears as they tried to make a reappearance.

'Anyway, I was walking back from where the late bus had dropped me off back to my apartment when I come past this bar I used to go to with my ex. It must have been open late cause there were still some drunk guys hanging around outside. I made to cross the road when one of them called out my name. Stupidly, I turned around to see who it was, and noticed it was him. My ex, that being. On a tangent slightly but the same thing happened the other night as well when we had a function here and I had to lock up. He came up to me and grabbed me, talking some shit about us getting back together. I left him for a reason and I'm not going back. Not unless I want something else broken.' Sophie gasped at that, but Milly held up her hand to stop her from interrupting. 'So here I am in the middle of the night with this idiot coming on to me, not letting me go so I can't run away, which obviously would have been my first thought. So I try and fight back, and end up kicking him in the balls and making a break for it. It worked the first time and I managed to get back to my apartment without him chasing me down. But last night.. last night it was different.' She stopped, taking a large gulp of her coffee. The hot liquid seared her throat as it went down and she relished the feeling as thought it was burning her words away.

'How so?' Sophie prompted gently when she didn't immediately carry on.

'Right, yeah. Last night, it happened again where he came up to me and grabbed me so I couldn't get away, but I think he learnt from last time, because he got so close that I couldn't do anything but listen to his drunken ramblings. I hoped he'd eventually go away; being that drunk takes its toll. But then out of nowhere, this guy is dragging him off me and telling Alex, my ex, to piss off. When Alex refuses to leave me alone, he full on punches him in the face. At this point, I don't know what to think, but as you do when you live in London, I automatically assumed he was just another drunk trying to act heroic in the hopes they might get with me. So I tell him to piss off as well. I just wanted to get home; I was tired, it was late and I had to work today and this guy wouldn't leave me alone. Admittedly, I was quite rude to him, and he called me out on it, leading me to the conclusion that he might not be an idiot drunk, but one of those rare decent human beings. By this time, he's already walking off, so I call back to him to say thanks, only then realising I don't even know his name. But then he just says "Simon", and I figured that would the last I'd see of him.' She smiled at the memory, remembering how the sound of his voice had awoken the butterflies in her stomach that had been dormant for far too long.
