Alex pov:I drove for hours. I wasn't really heading anywhere in particular. Just driving to get away from Phoenix. They would eventually find out I was gone and come after me and Izzy. I drove aimlessly through the backroads in the night never slowing down or stopping. Izzy didn't say anything beside me and she hadn't for the past hours. She was just gazing off into space. I grabbed her hand with one of mine. She turned to look at me and gave a half smile and squeezed back. The pain in my head was still there but it was slowly fading. But I was getting tired. I slowly stopped the car. We were in the middle of some empty fields. I pulled over to the side of the road and stopped.
"What the fuck?" Isabelle whispered besides me. It was a good question. "How did all of this happen?" She asked. "It all started that night that with you and me." I said. She didn't say anything. "Remember the morning after I went to go get a mtn dew? Well on my way there I was attacked. It was Phoenix. Somehow they knew I was coming. They drugged me and put that thing on my back. It-it controlled me." I paused. Talking about it was more painful than I thought. "I couldn't fight it. Believe me I tried but it only made my head explode in pain. But I tried fighting every second of it. I swear it wasn't me." I said. Izzy didn't say anything for a second. "And then I uploaded that virus. It took down the bases defenses so Phoenix could come and take over. I killed max and Cameron." I finished. "It wasn't you" was all Izzy said. "If I had just fought harder-" I started but Izzy cut me off. "Alex. It wasn't you. You couldn't have done anything." Izzy tried reassuring me. It didn't really work. "I'm so sorry" I told her. She didn't say anything. After a while she broke the silence. "So it wasn't you that screamed at me?" She whispered. "God no. It was graymark controlling me. I would never do that to you. Never" I said quickly. She just nodded her head. I clicked the button on the dash that controlled the interior lights. "Alright what do we have in terms of supplies." Izzy dug her comm device out of her pocket and a phone out of the other. "All I have is my phone and your comm device." She said. I pulled out my own iPod and my cash card. "Alright we've got an iPod a phone and basically a limitless amount of cash. But we're wanted fugitives. If Cameron and max survived-" I paused, wincing at the thought. "If they survived they'll try to contact us when they were safe. We just have to wait for them to call" I told her. She nodded. "Well right now I think we need to sleep. I'm exhausted." Izzy said. I was too. "Alright" I said and I turned off the light.
I declined my chair back and Izzy did the same. We sat In the dark and I started to drift off. I heard Izzy shuffling beside me. "Alex?" She whispered. "Yeah" I whispered back. "Do you still love me?" She muttered. "Yes. Always. I love you Isabelle" I said. "I love you too" she said. And we both fell asleep as the sun started to rise.
Isabelle pov:
I heard Alex's breaths even out as he fell asleep beside me but I couldn't fall asleep myself. Too much was going through my head. Everything had happened so fast. One day. One day and everything was changed. Alex was back. It was him again. I had known there was something wrong with him but I hadn't done anything. And then he tried to warn me about Luke but I didn't listen and walked right over to him. I was so dumb. But Alex. Alex was a different story entirely. When I first saw him I could see his face scrunched up in pain. But his eyes when he was torturing Luke, still haunted me. I felt horrible to admit that I was partially scared of Alex now. It was stupid. All those hurtful things he said hadn't been him. I couldn't stop thinking about all the awful things that had happened so recently, so I fell into a restless sleep.
"Izzy wake up" I felt Alex nudge my shoulder and jolted awake. I backed away from his hand. I saw a flicker of sadness on his face and he drew his hand back. It was morning outside. The sun had just rose illuminating the barren field we were in. "We should get moving. Phoenix will be looking for me." Alex said as he started the car. I wanted to say sorry for backing away but I didn't open my mouth. Just then I heard a comm devices shrill ring. Alex reached back and pulled one out of his jacket and answered it. "Max? Is that you?" He asked. I could faintly hear the voice on the other end. "How did you get out of there?" Alex face was a mixture of surprise and joy. "What? No she's fine." He stopped. The other voice was going crazy. "Alright. Alright. If we make it I'll call you." Alex said and hung up. "Who was it?" I asked nervously. "Max. Him and Cameron made it out. They're fine." He replied. I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding in. "We've got bigger problems. Max tracked us here. We're a few miles out of San Diego. Phoenix has called in all of their units. There circling into San Diego looking for us. Our only chance is to hide someone where in the city until they realize we're not there." Alex said hurriedly and gunned the car. "Well how long do we have before they get here?" I asked him. "20 minutes. We have twenty minutes to hide." He said gravely. We pulled out a main road going up a hill. When we got to the top I saw the city unfold beneath us. Alex was speeding but he slowed down once we got into town. "Where do we go?" I asked him. "I have an idea. There's a high school nearby. We're going to ditch the car." He said. A minute later we pulled into an ally way.
