Chapter 21 : problems

Alex pov:

I heard voices in the darkness. I didn't hear who they belonged to or what they said. I couldn't pay attention. My head hurt. It felt like someone had stabbed me right in my head but everywhere at once. It was a throbbing pain and it was blocking me from waking up. I could numbly feel my body. But I still couldn't move. This time it wasn't because graymark was controlling me. It was something else. I was utterly exhausted. Not my body but my head. I wanted so desperately to sleep. But the pain was excruciating. Slowly despite the pain I fell asleep.

My eyes jumped open. It was bright. Too bright. I half closed them. I focused in and saw Izzy sitting beside me. She was staring at me with tears in her eyes. "Izzy" I croaked. "Is it you?" She whispered. I nodded. "Listen. You have to" my voice paused. My strength was failing I could see the darkness coming back around me. "Listen. Their coming. Phoenix. And Luke" I said but my mouth shut against my will. "What about Luke?" Izzy asked but it was too late. I was gone. Back into darkness.

Isabelle pov:

Alex shut his eyes and went still again. His last words were Luke. I got up and left the med bay. It all had happened so fast. Alex yelling at me then that thing on his back. I knew those things he said wasn't actually him but that didn't make me feel any better. That look in his eyes. Like he hated me. Like he wanted to hurt me. I shuddered and kept walking towards Luke's room. Maybe somehow he knew something about what was going on. At least it was a distraction from what was going on in my head.

I got to his room and knocked. It took him a few seconds to answer. He opened the door. I saw a few duffel bags on his chair. He also looked like he was about to go somewhere, he was dressed in a dark jacket. "Hey Luke." I said. He didn't reply. His expressionless face turned to an almost evil grin. "Oh hello Isabelle." He said. He stepped aside to let me in. He shut the door behind me. I opened my mouth to ask him something but shut it. Something felt wrong. My limbs turned to jelly but I couldn't move. "You know it was perfect timing you coming here" Luke said but it sounded like he was far far away. Then something hit my head. It felt like someone was stabbing my head. I fell to my knees and my eyes teared up. Then it stopped. I opened my eyes but it wasn't me. I couldn't feel anything below my neck. "W-what's going on?" I slurred. "Ah well you see I was just going to leave, didn't want to be here when Phoenix takes this place over. I was going to get your boyfriend but it's not really him. He's under our control. We were just going to leave you here but having you come along will ... Entertain me." He said as he started laughing. Why was it that everytime there was a bad guy he turned into a perv around me? I tried moving my hands or arms and I saw Luke flinch. "Don't try to fight me. I may be tired but I can still control your sexy ass" he said and grabbed his bags before opening the door. As he turned the handle, a phone rang. He took a cell phone out of his pocket. "Yes? That soon? Yes. Why? All right fine. " he said to the voice on the other end. Then he turned to me. "Well change of plans." He said and handed me a gun. I watched as my arm raised and pointed the barrel at the side of my face. He opened the door and I followed him. I continued to fight him but to no avail. Suddenly Luke spun around to face me and back handed my cheek. It stung. "Now stop fighting or I'll make you blow your brains out!" He whispered harshly and continued walking. This entire situation was so dumb I couldn't even understand it. One moment everything in life was fine the next Alex hated me and I was being controlled by some pervy traitor. I saw we were walking towards a conference room. I heard familiar voices coming from it. Then me and luke stepped through the door.

Alex pov:

I woke up feeling like a spike was in my head. I was still laying on my side in the medbay but izzy was gone. I vaguely remembered what i had told her. "They're coming" i had said. Phoenix. I had to tell max. I had to warn him. I sat up slowly, still not used to actually being able to control my own body. Pain lanced through my head like a horrible migraine. My movements were slow and sluggish but i got up. Spots swam in my vision. I saw my shirt was crumpled on a table beside me along with the metal contraption that had controlled me. The small needle was bloody. As i looked at it my back flared in pain. I closed my eyes and waited for it to pass. I opened them and left the medbay as i pulled my shirt on.

I started walking towards max's office. I opened his door ,without knocking, to see him and cameron talking. At the sight of me they both went silent. "Max they're coming" , i said in what voice i could muster. he looked puzzled "Who?" he asked. The pain in my head had turned into a slow dull throb. "Phoenix. they're on their way." i said as i leaned my head against the cool wall. "How do you know and when?" max asked quickly. before i could answer he continued. "Actually wait i'm calling a conference. Cameron and alex follow me." he said as he rose from behind his desk. I went to follow max and my legs gave out from under me. Cameron caught me and helped me up. i mumbled thanks as we walked. "is it really you again?" he asked me as we followed max. I nodded unable to use my voice.

We arrived in a room with a large circular table in the middle. Two people were already here. One of them was the doctor. A spike of fear shot through me.I pushed the fear down. I couldn't deal with it right now. I cursed myself for never doing this before. "Alright now that everyone's here, Alex tell us what's going on." Max said and all the eyes went to me. I didn't know where to start. "About a month ago I was attacked outside base. They put this thing on my back that allowed them to control me. They had me plant a virus on your computer and when it was done uploading they would attack the base. But Cameron and Isabelle got the thing off my back. But the virus is finished. Phoenix is coming to attack the base right now." I mumbled out. This pain in my head was beginning to get annoying. I closed my eyes as max started issuing orders to the others telling them to sound the evacuation alarm. I opened my eyes as I remembered something. Everyone was getting ready to leave. "Wait there's one more thing" I said. "Luke's one of them. He helped plant the virus." I said as the door opened. "Yes I did in fact" said a cold familiar voice. It was Luke and by him was Izzy pointing a gun at her own head.

"Now all of you sit down unless you want Isabelle here to blow her head all over the place. " Luke said as he pulled his own gun out and pointed it at us. Everyone sat except me. I stood up now, adrenaline coursing through me. Luke steadied his gun on me. "Now now Alex, you wouldn't want anything to happen to Isabelle would you?" He asked. I saw Isabelle cock the gun. "Alex it's Luke, he's controlling me. " she whispered frantically before her mouth shut on her. " alright here's what's going to happen, in about five minutes Phoenix will swarm this place and kill all of you. But they want you alive Alex. So you're going to come with me or Isabelle dies. Now let's go" Luke said. The room was quiet. I could feel Luke's mind over Isabelle's, tainting it. Despite the pain in my head I raised my hand to Luke.

I lashed out with my own mind. It was like throwing harpoons at him. I felt them sink it. I invaded his mind making him still. Then I began to torture him. All my rage over everything that had happened to me and Izzy boiled over. I was merciless in my attack, making him feel like everyone of his nerves was tipped in fire. He screamed in imaginary agony. But I didn't stop there. I made him see things of nightmares. At this point his was clawing at his own head between screams. I poured all of my pain onto him. "Alex stop!" I heard Isabelle scream distantly. I stopped and my red vision that I didn't even know I had cleared.

Luke was lying, curled on the ground, sobbing and shaking. I looked to everyone else. They were staring at me in horror. Isabelle just looked at me with an infinite sadness. Before I could open my mouth to say anything an explosion went off and the entire base shook. Alarms began to blare. "Alex and Isabelle get the hell out of here! Run!!" Max screamed at me and Izzy. I grabbed izzy's hand and ran. I raced towards my room as I shouldered my way past the people in the blaring halls. I quickly grabbed my jacket and rushed back out with Izzy in tow. More explosions rocked the base. I burst out the main doors. It was nighttime out and a breeze was blowing. I looked up to see a gunship circling slowly firing rockets into the tip of the base.

With a screech it exploded in blue light. The shields around the base flared and died. I rushed towards the lycan hypersport. I got in with Isabelle and started the car. I slammed my foot on the gas and drove away. "Wait, what about max and Cameron?!" Isabelle screamed at me. "They'll be fine" I said as I looked in the rearview window. I watched two fat helicopters begin to drop men around the base. I pulled off to the side of the road on top of the hill that overlooked the base and me and Izzy got out of the car to watch the deteriorating scene ahead.

The pyramid shaped HQ that we had been living in for months was aflame. Helicopters swarmed the base, dropping off soldiers. Izzy had tears streaming down her face. "Izzy we have to go" I said as gentle as possible. She nodded silently and got in the car. I got in as well and booked it in the opposite direction of our burning home.
