"And then he made this joke. But by how his body language looked, I don't exactly think he was joking." I explained everything I could from the video session to Kirstie, who was stirring her margarita with her straw in the booth seat across from me.
Jake left to see his boyfriend, and I had texted Kirstie to meet me at a local Mexican restaurant near our house. I had to tell her the news and get her advice.
She had a thoughtful look on her face. She looked at her drink, pink and fancy, while she thought.
"Maybe you made him jealous after all."
"I feel so shitty about it."
"I'll agree. What your plan symbolized was wrong. But at least you're regretting it. Maybe don't bring home another guy to the guy you like?" I smiled.
"I don't think that I'll have to worry about that anymore. Scott would make me forget about my date anyhow." Kirstie smiled back at me, and then she sipped her drink. I tilted my head. "What are you all giddy about?"
"You liking Scott. I never realized how cute you two would be. In the many years of being best friends, I never would have thought."
"What, did you think it was going to be you and I?" I teased.
"What? Ew. Definitely not. I have to be the fashionable one in the relationship at all times." We laughed together, which felt really good considering the place I was in. It felt good to just have girl talk.
"Speaking of, how is Jeremy? You guys doing okay?" When I mentioned his name, Kirstie's eyes brightened, and she smiled sheepishly.
"Yes," she said, revealing a wide grin afterward. "Very okay."
"Gross," I teased again. She kicked me under the table, and I laughed.
"But this isn't about me, sugar. What's your game plan with Scott?"
I took a big swig from my margarita, letting the sweet yet strong strawberry liquid slither down my throat. Refreshing, if I do say so myself.
"I don't know. I want to talk to him...I want to know what he's thinking."
"Then do that. But don't blow it out of proportion. Don't freak him out. Don't confuse him. We both know that Scottie gets very confused easily."
I nodded, sighing. "I know."
"Good. Now, are you sure of what you'll need to do?"
"Yes, ma'am," I saluted her. She nodded with approval.
"Good soldier."
My phone buzzed in my pocket. Normally, I'd look at it and put it on the table facedown. But that wasn't the case, especially with it being Scott.
Scott: don't need leftovers anymore. gone to a friend's, be back #soon.
"I wonder who the friend is," Kirstie said when I showed her the screen. I nodded in agreement.
"Should I just text him and say okay?"
"Yeah, I guess you can't do anything now."
Mitch: mkay. ps, i'm only on my first margarita. texts to come. ;)
Scott: counting on it. <3
"He sent me a heart," I said.
"Let me see." I showed her the screen again, but she shook her head at me. "Looks like somebody's not special enough for heart emojis."
"Oh shut up, will you?"
We laughed again, and I turned my phone on silent to enjoy the rest of my night without distractions.
Distractions or emotions.
Or Scott.
