Dear Alex,
I was sitting on the old couch with the window open, watching an orange and black caterpillar squirm across the windowsill. I pet it with my finger and watched it curl into a ball. Then it uncurled and kept going. I wonder what I looked like to it- big and ugly and pixelated. It's tiny knees were probably shaking every time I went to touch it's soft back.
I had better things to do. I shouldn't have been wasting my time.
Sean came pounding up the stairs outside, and I jumped to my feet, trying to look busy, my heart pounding.
"What the hell, Carrie?" he yelled, bursting into the apartment. "Why isn't dinner on the go? You're useless!"
He walked over and slammed the window shut, right on the tiny caterpillar- and it stopped crawling, split in half, dead.
Love,
Carrie
