Sjin
“Where is he?” I muttered to myself, standing inside the Geothermal Facility, staring at the lava.
My hands are clasped behind my back. Rythian’s face keeps running through my head. The next time I saw him, he wasn’t going to get away. If I had to, I’d kill everything that mattered to him. The only real issue was, I didn’t know if I could sabotage him more than killing Zoey. The mage was probably dying slowly from the inside, even if Duncan couldn’t see it.
It was time; time for another adventure to find him. This time he would be dead, not just wounded. The mage wouldn’t slip from my grasp this time around. If I had to kill Lalna in the process, so be it.
Duncan
No, Duncan. Don’t do this to yourself. Not here, not now. I reflect, wiping the flowing tears from my eyes as I thought harder about Leah; her storm gray eyes, her flowing river of blood red hair, the way her smile glistened in the sunlight. I hadn’t answered Rythian yet, and I obviously couldn’t behind all the tears that were being shed from my foliage green eyes, the ones that were turning blue from sadness.
The mage sat beside me; I could feel his violet optics burning into my scalp. I currently had my knees tucked into my chest, with my head hanging.
“It’s alright. Don’t worry about it.” The mage comforted me.
He deserves to know the truth, however painful the truth may be. I told myself. Whenever you’re ready, if you ever are ready.
I sighed and uncurled my body. My face revealed the horrible state this conversation would have put me in. The mage sighed directly after me, and then spoke again. “I think you know how much I really hate you.”
Where is this going?
“But I will tell you I trust you.”
Rythian? Are you sick?
“Even though you are a jerk.”
Oh! Gee thanks Rythian! Aren’t you a charmer?
“I know what you’re thinking.”
Please don’t tell me you’ve self-taught yourself to read minds. This conversation might get really awkward.
“You’re thinking you would really rather never tell me the story. And I get that.”
Oh, phew. He can’t… Tell him, Duncan. Tell him now. No, wait, go somewhere safe, and then tell him. No, tell him now.
The brunette gave me a concerned look as I gazed into his eyes. I knew what he was thinking, ‘what the heck are you thinking, Duncan?’
“What is that look for?” Rythian said as he looked at my pondering face.
“Uh…” I replied, watching as Rythian bit his lip when he touched his wound again. “Let’s, uh, go back to my place. We’ll talk there. I’ll be able to do more for your leg there, too.”
“Okay? Is everything alright? You look worried.”
I removed the disturbed visage from my face. “Oh, no. Nothing. Everything’s, uh, fine.” The words slipped suspiciously fast from my lips.
The mage made no further remarks, only attempted to stand, but soon held his arms out to me for help.
Sips
In the depths of my Janitor’s Closet, I stood peacefully watching items get sucked up by the obsidian pipe. I crossed my arms as I thought about recent events. Why was Sjin being so mysterious? Why had he come home from his adventure with a triumphant look on him? Where did he get the enchanted bow from? Why was he always leaving?
I sighed and turned to the ladder. My hand clasped one of the rungs, and then the other, then my feet. When I reached the top, my heart lurched a little as I glanced forward to see Sjin standing right there.
“Hello, Sips!” The mustached man chimed, smiling.
“Oh, hi. You scared me Sjin!”
“Sorry, my apologies. I was going to join you in your little closet.”
“Ah, very nice. May I just ask, why?”
“I had something I needed to tell you.”
“And what’s that?” I was worried he was going to say he was going on another adventure.
“I’m leaving you again for an adventure.”
I rolled my eyes. “Again, really?”
“Sorry, but yeah.” Sjin crossed his arms. “Is something wrong?”
“Why have you been leaving so often lately?”
“What do you mean?”
“You know. You’ve been coming to me every week, saying you have to leave for an ‘adventure’” I created air quotes and rolled my eyes once more.
“It’s nothin’! Do you not trust me to leave you?”
My lip curled before I answered him. “I can’t when you come back with a triumphant look on your face that makes me think you just killed someone!” My answer came out as an awkwardly loud scream. I could tell my companion was startled by the booming sound of my voice, because he took a step away from me. “What I mean is, where have you been going?” I cleared my throat and calmed down dramatically.
“Does it matter? We’re friends, you can trust me!” Sjin attempted to reason. I wasn’t buying it.
“Yes, we’re friends. Thus, we can tell each other what the hell we’re up to!” My voice rose again on those last six words.
The brunette started making hesitant cracks in his speech. I crossed my arms and waited for an answer. “Ugh, fine.” He beat his foot to the floor, kind of like the way a child does when they are throwing a tantrum. “I’m working on ridding the world of Lalna and Rythian.”
I opened my eyes wide. Then, my teeth bit down on my inner lip. Sjin and I stopped talking, and I only walked past him, striding right out the door.
“Sips! Oh my god.” Sjin sighed in frustration.
“What?!” I spat back, opening the door to the facility on my way out.
“Why are you mad?”
I stuttered a few times, trying to find the right words to say. Finally, though, I found them. “Why do you never give up on this plot? Will you and Duncan learn to get along? Can you figure out what your problems are and solve them? Since as long as I’ve known you, you’ve fought him! You’ve wanted to kill him since the day you met him!”
Sjin tried to butt in. “Si-“
“I’m not done!” I screamed, pointing my index finger at him. He instantly stopped talking and bit his lip. “You’ve got to end this. I remember the first days I spent with you, and Duncan was the least of your worries. We could just talk and learn more about one another until we were great friends and living on the same lot. But now, you can’t get that Lalna character out of your mind, and we can’t work on the things that are really important, like the fact that the Tower of Power over heated last week!” I sighed heavily and continued out the door. Sjin didn’t say a word, didn’t move, and didn’t acknowledge anything.

It took a few hours for the steam that had grown up inside of me to settle. In the meantime, I had taken a walk up to the volcano and sat looking at the river for a while. I had no idea what Sjin was doing, but I didn’t care. If he left, so be it, and I’d deal with it later. I only hoped I hadn’t scared the poor Scot out of his wits when I stormed by. Nilesy had never seen me with an actual temper, not just the sarcastic one I wore quite often.
The flowing river swam along the banks of the beach I had now migrated to. I sat, legs crossed, with my elbows on my knees and hands on the sides of my face. This fight was going to start the Dark Ages of Sjin and my relationship, and I knew it. I probably wouldn’t be talking to him for a few weeks about anything besides the obsessed idiot he had made of himself over the years.
I would apologize as soon as he did the same.
