Duncan

“Sister…” Rythian remarked after a day or two of looking through online records through my computer.

“Leah and Zoey Proasheck; daughters of Marsha Cock and Victor Proasheck.” I read directly off the family tree shown on the large screen of the monitor.

Leah

“Five minutes!” I excitedly called to Zoey.

“I know! I’m coming!” Zoey then walked into view, and I could see that she had changed her attire. She was now wearing a green lens over one eye, a black shirt, ending at the bottom of her ribcage, with a green net-like item underneath. My sister also had a short, red cape on her back, which made me notice a green stripe in her hair. On the bottom, she was wearing a simple pair of black leggings.

  “Wow! Lookin’ snazzy, eh?”

“No, not really. This is just what I wore the last time I was on Earth.”

  “Oh. Well, it’s very nice!”

  “Thank you. Now, shall we?”

  “Yeah, let’s go.”

The stairway opened. My heart began beating fast, and Ridgedog could tell it frightened me to go home.

“If you ever change your mind, let me know. All I can say now is, ‘Good Luck!’” He said, standing tall beside me.

I locked my gaze in front of me. “Thanks, Ridge.” My teeth clenched. I knew I was deathly afraid of the realm below me. The clouds seemed so inviting, but the grass and dirt didn’t.

“Come on, Leah. Let’s go.” Zoey smiled, walking ahead of me to the stairs. “Leah?” She turned back to me, realizing I was conflicted. Then, she understood. “You don’t want to leave. I bet you’re afraid of seeing your friends, or your enemies. It’s gonna be alright.” She held my hand in hers, and then she pulled me to the stairway.

The stairwell, made of stone, seemed long and uninviting. Worry grew in me as I thought about all the horrible people who had done so much to me. On the other end, I dreamed of seeing Lalna. I fantasized his eyes would light up when he saw me, I hoped he had grown to be the man I prayed for him to be. This stairwell seemed to go on forever. I just wanted to get it over with, so I couldn’t turn around.

As I was on the last step, I hesitated.

“Come on, one more step.” Zoey cooed, as she was beside me.

  “I can’t do it.” I decided.

“No, you have to. This is your destiny, I know it. Ready?”

  “No. I can’t.”

“Yes you can. There are people on this Earth who will be happy to see you.”

I closed my eyes. “On three. One…”

  Zoey joined me. “Two… Three…”

My left foot touched the ground first. The ground below was more inviting than I had imagined. It was just what I needed. I had lost this, and I had loved this. My right foot followed, and that was a great feeling of satisfaction.

“Good job, you’re here now. Let’s go find him.” My sister offered, pulling me in and embracing me. She was about a foot shorter than I, allowing my chin to be nestled into her forever red hair.

“Thank you, Zoey. I love you.”

  “I love you too, Leah.”

Her words had a satisfactory feel to them. I then left her arms and began walking, having no clue where to go.

“Hold on!” Zoey called. “Where are you going?”

  “I’m going to find Lalna.”

“Well, that’s the wrong way.” She smiled, pointing to a castle in the opposite direction of my descent.

  “He lives there?”

  “Yes. That’s Duncan’s Castle.”

Rythian

“Duncan!” I snapped, turning to the scientist. He had just scared all the life out of me, opening the door obnoxiously while I was in deep thought.

“Rythian?” He asked, confused as to what he had done wrong.

  I sighed, “Just never mind.”

He rolled his eyes, walking over to his computer.

I set my head back down into my hands, as I had been.

  “Everything alright?” Duncan asked.

  “What? Oh, yeah… everything’s fine…” I faked a smile.

“No. That’s not true.” He pulled a chair up beside me and sat down.

“I got this feeling this morning. I don’t know what it means, but… I think it’s about Zoey.”

Lalna began laughing. “Rythian, Zoey’s dead! You were there, I was there!”

“Yeah, I know that. For some reason, though, I just think I can communicate with her somehow.”

“Sorry, Ryth. I just don’t see how that’s possible.”

I bit the inside of my lower lip, keeping myself from saying any more.  Even if he didn’t believe me, I wasn’t giving up. I just felt like Zoey was alive somewhere. I know it wasn’t possible, but it felt that way. I decided it might just be better to walk out of this conversation, so I got up and walked out of the room.

Oh, Zoey… If you can hear me right now, answer me… I thought as I began feeling more wrong than ever before. A painful jolt passed through me, making me wonder if it was Zoey or just my imagination.

  “Rythian!” Duncan called.

“What do you want?!” I cried back, irritated.

  “Come look.”

I didn’t feel all that interested, but I went to take a look anyways.

When I walked back into the computer room, Lalna was looking up to the screen, which displayed one of the camera mount’s footages.

“Who is that? I don’t recognize her.” I said, referring to the woman shown on the screen, who was standing in front of the main door.

“What d’ya say we go take a look.” He happily exclaimed, seeming as if his mood had changed very quickly.

“Do you know her?” I asked as he left the room, and I followed him out.

  “Nope.”

I raised an eyebrow at him as he typed ‘open’ into the door control. The door opened, and Lalna stood in front of it, expectantly.

  “Hello?” The woman’s voice inquired.

“Yes. Who are you?” Duncan asked.

“Oh!” The red-head suddenly was shocked. “Are you Lalna?”

“One and only!” He responded proudly. “May I ask your name?”

  “L-Leah…” She trailed off.
