Sjin
“We’d better hurry up and get home.” Sips suggested to me as we sat at one of the tables in the Captive Creeper.
“Why the rush? There’s nothing we have to get done, or do we?” I responded.
“I don’t know. I’ve just had this feeling that we should be home.” After his response, he proceeded to take another gulp from the stone mug in his right hand.
“Maybe we should get going then?” I asked, trying to go along with what Sips wanted.
He hesitated. “Oh, nah. I can deal with it tomorrow.”
“Alright, it’s almost nighttime, maybe it would be best to get home before it gets too dark.”
“Don’t worry about it. We’ve walked through the dark a lot. This can’t be any different.”
I shrugged and put my bottom lip on the outer edge of the cup in my hand, which I went on to drink the rum that was in it.
“How is everything, boys?” Minty sighed, waling by to wipe off the table next to ours.
“Excellent, Minty. Thank you.” Sips said, smiling at her.
“I’ve been wanting to ask you.” Minty began, lifting her gaze from the dish cloth to us. “There’s been a rumor going around about a new girl named Leah. Have you heard anything about that?”
“No!” I quickly replied, as to make it seem like we hadn’t seen her and I wasn’t her rival.
It obviously didn’t work.
Minty laughed and waked over to me, resting her hand on my shoulder. “Do you know something, Sjin?”
The look on Sips’ face told me, “What are you saying?” but he didn’t say it aloud.
“I don’t know anything. Just a catch in my throat.”
“You answered quite quickly, or didn’t you notice?” The blonde raised one eyebrow.
“It’s nothing, Minty. I’m just a bit paranoid.”
“Ah, I see…” She drifted off, and then walked back to the bar counter.
“Sips, we should get going.” I commanded.
“Why? What’s th-“ He stopped talking as I kicked his shin. The man then rose from his seat and followed me out the door.
Once outside, he spoke to me again. “What the heck was that all about? Minty is our friend, Sjin. You don’t have to keep secrets from her.”
“I don’t want to freak anyone out by saying that she appeared dangerous in front of us.”
“Why does that matter? You seem to adore violence!” His voice rose as we walked up the hill.
“I knew something was up!” Minty’s voice shouted from the entrance of the bar.
I let out a small sigh. “I’m sorry, Minty.”
“You know you can tell me these things, right? Or am I not responsible enough to be trusted with your ‘deepest secrets’” She created air quotes.
“Listen, Minty. Leah was over at our place, and she was asking us questions that made us all uncomfortable. She had a pistol on her.” Sips tried to help the situation. The uneasy expression on Minty’s face caused him to say more. “She didn’t hurt anyone, but she did shoot it. She’s pleanty friendly, you just have to make sure on her good side, and we’re not.”
