“Okay,” Leah said, cracking the knuckles of both her hands. “Let’s get to work.”

“Leah,” I began. “How long do we have?”

The red-haired beauty paused and looked up at the computer screen. She didn’t say anything for a few seconds, then realized something unknown to me.

“What?” I asked, making sure she and I would be on the same page.

  “I haven’t been counting,” she replied. “Shoot…”

“When was the last day you remember counting?”

“A long time ago. Maybe seven month—oh, God.” The emotion on her face frightened me, and as her fingers on the keyboard of my computer started to fly across the keys, I knew something was wrong.

“Leah, is everything alright?” I inquired as she panicked.

She didn’t answer for several minutes until she stopped typing and sank down into the computer chair. “No.”

“What’s going on?” I felt so off turn. “Leah, what the hell is going on?”

“Let’s go!” she screamed, sprinting to the door of the computer room and opening the front door as I caught up.

“Leah!” I screamed after her as she almost fell racing out the door. My hand wrapped around the corner of the front door. “Come back!”

Do I follow her, or just stay put? I thought, following her with my eyes. She had nearly disappeared over the horizon.

A source from inside replied with: Yes, go… It seemed to drift from my mind, and I began running after her. I didn’t know exactly where she was going, but if I ran fast enough, I could catch her. Control your breathing. You can catch her, Duncan.

Puffs of air entered and exited my body as I went into a long distance sprint. I may die after running this far this fast, but as long as I could help before that time, no harm done. With a loss of air to use for calling, I didn’t use any extra energy than I needed. Hundreds of yards later, I could see Leah’s bright red hair shining in the noontime sun. She had stopped, so I could finally catch up. My long pants said that I had run as far as I did to catch her.

“Did you hear that?” she asked, turning to me.

I listened closely for a few moments. “No.”

“Well, listen closely.” Leah stopped speaking and kept staring me down. Her eyes widened, waiting for me to hear what she did.

A miniscule sound radiated softly across the sound waves all around me. It sounded a band of drums. “The drums?”
