“The only thing Leah wanted was to disarm that device.” The scientist explained after he finished his informational rant on this ‘Catastrophe Device’ that he had been telling me about.

Apparently, Leah was a skilled scientist, even more skilled than the man before me, and was always a very friendly and energetic girl. She had lived in a large castle all by herself, but loved to have company. However, she had a dream, to disarm the device and save the world from demolition. On the other end of it, she had secrets, just as everyone else. Lalna said that she had these short period of time where she would want to be alone, locked in her lab, and wasn’t the fun and energetic person she loved to be.

“So, what I need to ask you is, will you help me?” Duncan said, speaking slightly above the thunderous night.

“Help you? With what?” I wondered aloud, asking myself why the Great Duncan was asking me, the very man he hated, for help.

“Well, I, uh, promised Leah I would follow through with her dream.”

“Wait, is she dead?” I wouldn’t be surprised if this was true, but I thought asking might clear the air.

The blonde but his lip and nodded slowly.

I closed my eyes and imagined Zoey’s face. The pain that I had felt when she died was probably much less than Duncan had felt when Leah died. I sort of felt pity for him, but only barely.

“Rythian, please. I really need your help to disarm the system.”

“Why do you need my help? It’s a scientific machine.”

“Not necessarily. Leah had said to me there was magic involved.”

“What happens if the device goes off?”

The scientist looked down at his feet, then back up at me. “The world splits into millions of sections, all separated by deep ravines, which will all be pulling anything on Earth into them by the gravitational force of the Earth’s core.”

“And, uh, how sure are you that you can disarm the system?”

“With you, about seventy-five percent sure. Without you, about sixty-six percent.”

I couldn’t keep my mouth from opening in shock. “So there’s the chance that it would be my fault for the world’s destruction?”

  “Yes, there’s always a chance.”

“No. I’m not having everyone know it’s my fault for the world’s end.”

“No one will know. They’ll never find out.”

“I’ll know!” I began raising my voice.

“No, because you’ll be dead, too!”

“That’s what you think! But it’s not true!”

“What are you talking about?! Of course you’ll be dead! Or is now the time you’re gonna tell me of your immortality?!” A large crack of thunder caused him to raise his voice even higher, so I did the same.

“No! I’m Enderborn! After my death I’ll just go on to live either on a newly crusted Earth, or in the End in the Queen’s Realm!”

  “Oh, really?”

“You don’t understand what that means! I’d rather spend the rest of my life alone than in an Enderman’s body! For you, whatever religious background you have, you’ll just go to whatever afterlife you believe in! I’ll be in a brand new body!”
