Duncan

The lights went out, and I was left to wait for Sjin’s return, which I doubted would be any time soon.

Infuriated, I put my back against the only solid wall of the cell, then let my feet slide across the floor so I could sit down. I put my hands behind my ears and bowed my head.

I stayed in the same position for what felt like hours. Being unable to do anything else, I thought calmly about what Leah, Rythian, and Zoey where probably thinking. Leah was most likely worried sick. Rythian must be getting a kick out of my absence. Zoey, well, I couldn’t even guess.

Finally, though, it struck me. Is this how I made other people feel when I was, what, protecting myself; getting revenge? Did they feel angry, frustrated, trapped? Maybe they did, and now I was feeling this pain. Was I really the monster, concealing myself behind stone walls, blocking out the entire world?

My frustration overcame me, I threw my hands from my head to the hard floor below me. I regretted that choice immediately.

A small groan left me as I ran my left hand across the back of my right hand. Stones fell from it, but no further injury could be felt, and I couldn’t look for one in the pitch black of the room.

My knees came to my chest. That’s when I put my elbows on them, then ran my fingers through my smooth, blonde hair.

Leah

The SipsCo Compound was much different than I had fantasized. All of the buildings made everything seem so intimidating, but something in the atmosphere scared me more than that.

  “Sips!” A voice called.

I ran from it, scared the man that it belonged to would see me.

“What do you want, Sjin?” Another voice called, which scared me more, for it came from right behind me.

“The sorting system is going haywire again.”

“Okay, I’ll… be right there…” He trailed off.

I slowly turned my head to see a man looking right into my eyes. “Uh-oh…”

“Hello.” The man said, smiling. He appeared to be very friendly, but I still wouldn’t fall for a trick.

  “Hi.” I relied cautiously.

“May I ask, who are you?”

  “Uh, uh…” I stuttered and didn’t answer.

“Sips.” He put his hand on his chest.

  “Uh, L-leah.” I introduced myself.

Sips got sort of suspicious. “I’ve never heard… of a Leah around here.”

“Well, I’m pretty new…” I smiled. “I’m looking for Duncan. I think he might be here.”

The man’s eyes opened wide as he heard me. “Duncan?”

“Is there a problem?” I asked, scared for his answer.

  “Don’t you know?”

  “Obviously not.”

  “Duncan… died…”

I froze. How could this happen? How did it happen? When, who, why?

“Sjin found him lying on the ground a few miles from here. I didn’t see him, but I trust Sjin to tell me the truth about it.”

My legs weakened and I fell to the ground. Were my ears deceiving me, or was my scientist really gone? A tear fell from my eye, and Sips kneeled down beside me, cautiously laying his hand on my back, which was trembling from the recent news.
