Two weeks passed and with each day, they were growing closer and closer to Carter. They were still unable to talk to Rae and Tyler alone, and it seemed as if Rae and Tyler forgot about the Hunter thing altogether. Sophia, Zander, and Iris sat with them everyday at lunch. Blaze quit trying to pester her and would occasionally sit with them at lunch, Logan joining him.
"Sophia, you're Imparter is going off," Iris whisper-shouted at her, catching her attention. Sophia snapped out of her daze as she quickly grabbed the round, silver compact out of her pocket and hid behind her book.
"I meant to leave it at home," she whispered back as all eyes in the room turned on her. The silver compact vibrated in her hand.
"Ms. Davis, is there something you would like to share with the rest of the class?" Mr. Allard asked looking at her expectantly.
"Denied," she whispered and the Imparter quit vibrating.
"I'm sorry. What was that?"
Sophia quickly hid the Imparter back in her pocket and set her book down. "I'm sorry, sir. I meant to put my phone on silent, not vibrate," she replied.
"No phones, Ms. Davis! This is your only warning!"
"Yes, sir." She nodded at him and he turned back to the board and continued to teach. Sophia took notice of everyone pulling out their phones as soon as his back was turned. He's so oblivious, Sophia mouthed and Iris nodded.
Lunch rolled around and Sophia met up with everyone else at her locker. She shoved her books into her locker and shut it. She turned to everyone with a small sigh.
"What's for lunch today?" she asked.
"Chicken strips with mashed potatoes, or you can go for the steak fingers," Carter replied and Sophia's nose scrunched up in disgust.
"This school really needs a better menu," she muttered as they walked into the cafeteria.
They grabbed their trays and sat at their usual spot, which was a long, brown table towards the corner of the room.
"Okay, so after school, we're gonna hangout over at Carter's. You guys in?" Tyler asked and Sophia looked over at him, confused.
"What?" they asked.
"I told my mom that I was gonna have a few friends over. Now you guys can show me some of those self defense moves," Carter informed.
"Today after school?" Iris asked and Carter nodded. Sophia, Zander, and Iris glanced between each other and then nodded.
"Sure," Sophia said with a smile.
"My mom's gonna be out shopping, so I'll have the house to myself for a few hours. If my-" Carter was cut off by Sophia's Imparter vibrating, and she cursed under her breath. "What is that?" The vibration wasn't like any that a phone could make.
"Uhm," Sophia cleared her throat as she stood up, "I'll be right back." She began half walking, half running to the doors of the cafeteria. As soon as she shut the doors behind her, she opened her Imparter. A small, light blue, circular crystal lifted from the cushion inside and it projected a hologram of Xavier's face.
"Yay! It worked!" Xavier shouted and Sophia glanced around to make sure no one was around. She began walking towards her locker.
"Xavier, I'm at school! Why are you contacting me on the Imparter?" she snapped.
"I tried contacting you earlier, but you didn't answer. I finally got my first Imparter," he said giddily.
"I was in class. Are you forgetting that I'm in the human world? They don't know about our technology..." Sophie stared at Xavier for a minute as she thought over what he just said. "Wait, your first Imparter? You should have gotten one for your eighth birthday. Jordan was supposed to give it to you."
