Chapter Five

* That Co-Worker *

It was eight years since the the sweet scent of vanilla filled my nostrils, awakening me from the natural atmosphere aroma. The arms that once held me when I really needed them. The laugh when I needed a little smile. The comfort and security I once had when she was here. I miss her. I miss the dark brown hair that faintly fell down her graceful back that I rubbed to ease her nerves. Or when she would wake up with tangles in her beautiful hair and hide before I saw how her bed hair truly was. I miss her. Can I kill cancer and revive my beautiful, Melanie?

It's been Five Days since I have been working in Sears and I couldn't wait to get my check. No more asking for money! Anyways, I died my hair last night with my mother at the salon because I wanted another color on me. I think dark brown suits me. Brushing my long new dark brown hair, I think about the party. What I am I thinking? I should of told Jabby I didn't want to go but I just froze. Now, I am forced to go. Yet, my curious mind pulled me towards no regret. Also, I wanted to see that co-worker.

"Darcy?" My name was lightly used by my mother from down the hall.

"Yeah?" I walk over in my khaki skinnies and blue Sears shirt with my name tag on display.

"We have new neighbors, did you know that?" She chirped with a smile. I swear, my mother is always full of light and happiness. "Can you please take this to them as a Welcome?" My stomach dropped once she finished her question. I really don't mind taking this bowl of baked delicious cookies next door where he lives, but I am afraid of who will answer and if its him, how he will receive our kindness of saying welcome to our new neighbors? Perhaps, he will throw me a pack of lung killing sticks.

"Yes, mother." I nod and when I turn around I shut my eyes while taking a deep sigh.

I walk out, my mother does the sign of the cross, and we depart for the afternoon. I still had twenty minutes before I go to work so I slowly walk over to that co-workers new home. Two lovely cars, his car was sitting there too. He is here. I bite my lips when I appeared in front of his door. My finger applied pressure on the door bell and heard the typical doorbell ding.

The knob quickly opens and there stood that co-worker, dressed as same as me. In our work clothes. My eyes lay off his similar clothing without his tag out in display and back to his eyes. They were on my hair, he noticed my new hair color. My eyes not once left him and he was examining me until I noticed.

"Welcome!" I smile and hold the batch of cookies to his chest. He looked baffled and stared at the cookies. He seemed mesmerized by the sugar goodies. Then he looked back at me. "Take them! It's a welcome and please, eat it up!" I smile and hand it to him. When I hand it to him, his hand touches mine accidently from the bottom of the tray and quickly he pulls away, dropping the glass bowl letting it shatter on the concrete.

Little stutters of broken unfinished words left my lips. I look up and put my dark brown hair behind my ear while blinking numerously. It hurt me that he let the glass break in front of us. Well, it wasn't really on purpose but why did he have to react when we touched?

My eyes look at him as he bent his long legs into a squat. I hear a sigh escaping his mouth and looks up at me where I am still standing. Then he signaled me to leave with his hand.

"The cookies were good.." I say, "I'll bake some more tomorrow. Don't mind the bowl, I'll... I'll just buy another one, have a nice day neighbor." I lightly wave and avoid eye contact. "May God be with you." Did I just tell him that? I just walked faster.

I expected a shout from him, but no. I expected a little peep out of him, but no. I expected him to at least let me hear his voice. What if he is Korean? Aish, why would I even say that? He doesn't look Korean at all. Perhaps a foreigner! Whatever it is, I am very curious how his voice sounds.

Got to work right on time and began to walk to back door. Surprised that that co-worker beat me there with that smoke escaping his mouth.

I had enough of that horrible smell! Since Day One! It's Day Five and he needs to stop this! My pace goes forward to him and point my finger to him ready to speak but inhaled the smoke and swallowed it all. Immediately after, I was crouched on my knees coughing loudly because it was horrible! His familiar little mocking laugh only made me angry so I get up and face him.

"What is your deal?" I speak confidently better than last time.

He didn't say a word but another chuckle while he covered the smile I am curious to see. Is he being playful? Or should I be scared he is.

Like before, he drop the cigarette inbetween us and scrapped it along the concrete floor. His face was serious and walked inside seconds later.

Yet, I yank him back out, feeling his arm. "Ladies first." I throw him a grin and walk in first with a wider smile. I giggle and begin to check my schedule of today's stationary.

Same old, Same old, work flew by like the speed of sound and caught up with Jabby since it was past eight. Did she forget we left at ten in the night? Anyways, she didn't look all that thrilled when I told her I couldn't go. She still told me to get ready so I had to go.

Once I walk down to my usual parking space, I was exepecting that horrible lung killing smell. He wasn't there but saw him inside his car just looking at me. He was intensively staring with those green eyes he has. The shiver he made me quake all through my spine and even shook my bones.

That co-worker will talk to me.

Without further ado, my hand through my long dark brown hair and feet commenced to speed walk to my car that was just a car beside his. The funny thing is, we both pulled out the same time and basically he stayed behind me through out the whole drive back to my home and his home next to mine of course.

Show yourself to me Co-Worker.

The sound of two car doors being shut echoing on the empty streets in front of us. We begin to walk along to our porch but I stop. My face turns to look at that co-worker.

But he was gone.
