You hadn't expected to run into many challenges when you agreed to help Liesel with her reading. You and Hans were close, him being essentially a father figure to you, and Liesel was a sweet girl, so it wasn't any trouble for you to become a sort of mentor to her. Not when you were a writer yourself.

At first it was so simple. You and her would disappear down to the basement of their house every day, she would read to you, getting help when it was needed, memorizing words she struggled with, you would help Rosa with dinner and then you'd either go home or help out around the house for more. You came from a wealthier family, so often when offers of paying for meals were rejected you would repay them through chores around the house.

Simply put, the Hubermann house was like a second home to you.

This was why you were in much shock when they asked you to stay away for a while.

The excuse was that Liesel was sick; a blatant lie and you knew it. You had visited before when she was feeling under the weather, so why now?

The answer wasn't what you expected in the slightest. And if it weren't for events that were to occur in the future, you knew that you would definitely regret the decision to burst through their door demanding answers one day.

Still, sometimes the risk is more than worth the reward.

It was a chilly day outside when you burst into the Hubermann household uninvited. You were almost grateful that Rosa and Hans were standing right there, simply so that you could confront them right away.

"What is going on?" you hissed at the pair, furious. "You've been hiding something from me; you think I can't tell that? More importantly, do you actually think that I'm not trustworthy? That I would actually betray the pair of you and Liesel in any way?! You two know me, you know my beliefs, you know my loyalty, so what is going on?!"

You miniature rant ended in tense silence. You weren't sure how long it lasted, though it felt like an eternity before Hans let out a long breath.

"You don't understand," he started, but you cut him off.

"Then let me understand. I can help you, don't you see this?"

Another silence, followed by a sigh as the pair examined you. The voice that spoke was once again male.

"Come on then. Let's go see if Liesel needs help with her reading."

"Hans-"Rosa sharply started, but was cut off.

"We can trust her. I know we can."

You nearly cried at that. "Thank you. I won't let you or your family down, I promise you that."

"I know," he said almost begrudgingly, before opening the door to the basement and beginning the descent down.
