Chapter 38

''It's okay sweetie, it's alright.'' Lauren mutters into Kyano's hair softly, gently rocking them from side to side. Her tears haven't stopped streaming down her cheeks since the moment she finally saw her little boy again. And she hasn't let go of him either, the two clinging onto each other with so much relieve and hope overflowing them.

When Brody walks into the kitchen to get Lauren a glass of water, she quickly reaches out to her phone to stop the recording. While Kyano buries his head further into his mother's neck, Lauren sends the recording to Camila quickly before Brody comes back. She knows she has no cell service around here, but as soon as she does the recording will be sent to Camila so she will at least know that she and Kyano are okay.

''Mommy...'' Kyano mutters sadly and Lauren squeezes her eyes shut as she quickly shoves her phone back into her pocket just as Brody enters the living room area from the cabin again.

''Shh honey, it's okay, I'm here.'' She whispers back, tightening her grip on her son and pressing soft kisses against his scalp. His scent calms her down immensely and having his small body in her arms again after everything they've been through gives her a strange feeling of peace.

''Here you go.'' Brody says as he puts the glass of water down on the table in front of Lauren while giving her a sweet smile.

It takes everything within her but she manages to smile back at him and nod in thanking. Brody just grins and sits down next to them. Too close for Lauren's liking when she feels his leg press against the side of hers.

Kyano seems to be uncomfortable as well when she notices him crawling even further into her. Lauren squeezes her eyes shut when she feels Brody's lips press a kiss against her temple and she pushes her forehead against her son's soft brown curls.

''You okay, Laur?'' Brody asks her softly while pushing some strands of black hair behind her ear, not wanting to worry his son. Lauren gulps and turns to him with a gentle smile.

''Yes. Just happy to hold him again.'' She answers shortly before turning back to Kyano. ''I missed you so much sweetie.''

''I missed you too.'' Kyano answers immediately, pushing his thumb in his mouth and closing his eyes when he presses his head against Lauren's chest, listening to her heartbeat.

Lauren feels her arms and legs burn painfully, but she can't loosen her grip on her son. Not now that can she finally hold him again. But she's exhausted. The adrenaline she felt earlier is wearing off and she's being reminded that her body hasn't fully recovered from her month long stay in space yet.

''Brody, do you have a bedroom in here? I'd really like to lay down for a few minutes.'' She asks him, hoping to get away from him and be alone with Kyano for a little bit. She needs time to talk to Kyano to find out what happened all this time, if he's really okay. And she needs to think of a way to get the hell away from her former best friend. Because every time she looks at him she doesn't only see the horrible and psychopathic things he's done, she also sees Camila's heartbroken face and she feels a sharp pain in her chest for leaving her girlfriend behind like that.

''Yeah, upstairs. Why?'' Brody asks, a smirk slowly appearing on his face and it makes Lauren almost throw up in disgust. Her panic rises again within her when she realizes how trapped she actually is. Yes, she has finally found her son and he is seemingly okay, but she's in a cabin in the middle of nowhere with somebody who has a truly sick mind and thinks Lauren chose him over Camila.

He thinks she loves him. And no matter how disgusted it makes her feel, Lauren has to keep up this façade and make sure he keeps believing that.

She feels Kyano's head press against her chest and she tries to focus on his breathing. She needs something to keep her from freaking out, to keep her grounded and focused. She takes a deep breath, taking in Kyano's scent once again to try to let it calm her down before looking back at Brody.
