29 : Friend Zone

Averyn's POV

Finally, it was summer holidays.I was packing my clothes on the floor when Darren barked in my room. He sat on my bed,behind me. "Still packing? We'll be leaving in two hours," he said. I rolled my eyes and kept folding my sweatpants,ignoring him. He rested his chin on my left shoulder, his fingers playing with the hem of my sleeve. "Don't disturb me,dude," I said, slapping his hand.He pouted and start playing with my ponytail.

"Actually, I didn't want to follow the trip," he said. I looked at him with frown."Why?" I asked. "Did you know that Nathan will joining us?" My eyes widen by his words."Really?" I shrieked in excitement. He gave me narrowed eyes. "Helen texted me after calling you but went into voicemail. You like him,right?" I continue my works. "I turned off my phone. Oh come on. You want to talk about it?" I chirped.

"Let's cancel the plan. Let's hang out together. You and me.That's all," he exclaimed. I put the clothes I folded in my bag,turning my body to face him."Darren," I sang his name in a way a mom pleading her son to stop crying. "I don't like him,okay? I'm just being happy because finally Helen will have a boy to protect and take care of her. You know how hard she is to let any boy knock her heart. Beside, I love someone else," I stated. Oops, slipped out of my mouth.

He jumped out from the bed,sitting on the floor in front of me with furrowed eyebrows."What?" he asked. I shook my head off, ignoring his question and continue packing my clothes. He gripped my arms to stop me from putting my shirts in my bag. My eyes met his,and I found sadness and hurt in there. Maybe it's just my imagination.

"Seriously? Tell me," he declared. I faked a laugh to ease the tension. "I'm just teasing you," I said. He looked at me lifted eyebrows and in disbelied. "Serious." I made a firm expression. He sighed in relief and start helping me packing my clothes. After 15 minutes, we done packing it. I decided to take a shower while Darren was watching TV.

We reached the beach house after two hours drive in Nathan's car. I gaped on the beach house once we stepped in. "So, me and Ave will be in the same room and both of you will be in a room across ours.It's at upstairs so let's unpack and hit the beach!" Helen shrieked in excitement. "Wait!" Darren's voice stopped Helen's steps on the stairs. "Why not me and V in the same room,while you and Nathan in the other room? You know? To let you guys know each other better," he suggested while hunging his arm around my shoulder. I nudged his rib as I saw Helen blushed and Nathan was nervously scratching his upper head.

"Nah. It's fine. Plus, I've got lots of thing to talk with Helen." I broke the awkwardness. Helen gave a thin smile before walking upstairs, followed by Nathan. I glared at Darren beside me. "Seriously? You're making them awkward," I pointed once Helen and Nathan already at upstairs. He furrowed his eyebrows in confusion. "What? I'm giving them a green light in their relationship," he declared. I rolled my eyes of his lack of sensitive. "We girls doesn't like to rush things up. Especially when it's related with feelings and heart. We doesn't want to look like a desperado. We want boys to take the first step first," I cleared. Just like us.

"You girls depending on boys that much?" he asked with lifted eyebrows. "No. It's actually because girls tend to like boys easily. Example, I can like you now but the next day I'll find Nathan is charming and start liking him. But you boys rarely show your true feelings towards girls. You guys only show it once you realized that you felt in love with someone and you'll make everything possible to show it.So, us girls will wait for the hint of boys so our heart didn't break," I claimed. I'm giving you hints for our relationship.

He nodded in agreement and started walking upstairs. I followed him and found myself in front of the door's room I assumed the room I'll be staying with Helen for three days from now. Darren already inside the room across mine and I knocked on the door. Helen opened the door with a smile. "Ave, can you tell them that we'll hit the beach at two? I'm quite tired. Let me take your bag," she said with a grin. I handed her the bag I've been holding before turning my heels and knocked on the boys' room door.

Darren showed up shirtless,only in his jeans and I tried to keep my eyes on his face, not his abs. "Helen said we'll be in the beach at two. So, yeah," I said. "Got it. You'll wearing shorts right?" he asked with a smirk. I nodded my head in slow motion because although I didn't like showing my skins,spending time at beach during summer with skinny jeans will made me stupid. But still, not in bikini.

"No bikini?" he asked with puppy eyes. I glared at him and walked into my room. I sat on the floor, start unpacking my clothes and put it in a wardrobe while waiting for Helen to finish her shower.After few minutes, she walked out in her bath robe. "I'm sorry for Darren. He kind like stupid," I said. "Yeah he is.Anyway, did you see Nathan's reaction by Darren's suggestion? Because I didn't," she pouted. "He looked nervous as hell. Do you guys already dating or what?" I asked. She shook her head off."Not yet but he pecked on my lips few days before," she said."Seriously?" I asked with widen eyes. She blushed,nodding her head shyly. "You should tell me sooner. Did Dania know this?"

"Nope. I didn't want to make it big. What if he just look at me as a friend?" she sighed. I nodded my head agreeily as my mind thought about me and Darren's situation right now. "You like Darren, right? I knew it from the way you react when he did couple things with you. You guys should really confess your true feelings. I can't believe our random stupid plan made you guys felt in love in real finally," she chirped.

I sighed as I know I couldn't lying to her anymore. "We are same. Afraid of telling him the truth in case we'll ruin the friendship," I agreed. "That's the danger of being in friend zone," she stated.
