So I just finished my summer reading book. It's called Speak. By Laurie Halse Anderson. At first, I thought this was going to be a super boring book and a weird cliche based on the summary and cover. But it wasn't. It was so much better. This girl named Melinda went to a party the week or two before the first day of high school. This upcoming senior was hosting the party. His friend raped Melinda. Melinda was drunk and scared and called the cops on the party. Everyone was mad at her and ignored her. Even her best friend (Rachel) didn't believe her who went with her to the party. She didn't have the guts to tell anyone the truth so she went on during her 9th grade year alone and with no friends. Her so called "friend" ditched her for a clique once she found out what Melinda did with the party. She finally told someone she trusted and her ex-best friend (Rachel) who was dating the person who raped Melinda. The raper tried to do it again in a closet when he found out his girlfriend (Rachel) dissed him. He got arrested when some of the basketball and field hockey players came to Melindas rescue.
This book really is empowering and makes people really think. This book gives me courage to actually talk to you guys about something like this. Speak up! When someone does this sort of stuff to you, whether it's rape or any type of sexual abuse to you, speak up. I will be talking more about this in the next chapter sometime today or tomorrow. I really think that this is something to talk about especially in a girl guide book. So stay tuned in the next day for the next chapter.
