Chapter One - Hide and Seek

I climb up the ladder to hide in the tree. Auntie Aphmau said this is where Dad used to hide all the time.

"Ready or not! Here I come!" Levin calls out. He was the same age as me. Jay and Malachi were both one year older than us. Alexis and Kyle were one year younger.

I climb up to the very top of the tree. I can see everyone in the plaza.

"Hey Annalise." Jay whispers to me.

"Jay what are you doing here!?" I whisper-yell at him.

"I'm hiding with you." He whisper-yells back.

"But you are terrible at hiding!" I try and urge him to go away.

"But you're awesome at it! Which is why I'm hiding with you!" He smiles cheekily.

"Fine." I sigh. "Let's move further up then." He nods and follows me up the tree.

I see Levin looking for Malachi. I grab a branch and throw it a few feet behind Levin. He buys the distraction and goes to investigate, which gives Malachi enough time to get a new hiding place.

"Wait what just happened?" Jay asks me a little confused.

"Just helping Malachi." I smirk. Levin looks where Malachi was but walks away after he sees he's not there.

"So you guys help each other?" I nod my head.

"If we can." I add.

"I want in on this."

"Fine." I sigh.

While we were talking I didn't notice Levin sneaking up on us.

"GOT YOU BOTH!!" He screams.

I flail my arms and fall off the tree.

"JAY!!!" I scream.

"ANNALISE!!" He screams back trying to grab my hand.

"DAD!! MOM!! HELP!!" I scream as I get closer to the ground. I close my eyes and wait to hit the ground but instead feel warm arms around me. I open my eyes and see Malachi.

"M-Malachi.." I stutter, the fear still in my voice.

"Are you okay?" He asks while putting me down.

"Y-Yeah...Thanks to you." I smile at him.

My dad and mom come running around the corner.

"What happened?" Mom asks me.

"Are you okay? Nothing broken?" Dad asks worriedly.

"Yeah I'm fine...I just fell out of the top of the tree.." I say.

"YOU FELL OUT OF THE TREE!?!"

"Aaron, calm down." Mom soothes him.

"Why don't you go home? I think Lilith wants to see you." He sighs.

"Yes dad. Bye Malachi." I wave to Malachi and run home.

"Lilith, Dad said you wanted to see me?" I knock on her door.

"Oh yes! Come in!" She calls out.

I open the door and see her with all of her dresses out.

"Ya know how school starts tomorrow?"

Right. Me, Lilith and Jay attend Scalewind high.
