*Carm's P.O.V.*
It's 4pm. Elise is taking a nap on my bed, she was pretty tuckered out after her breakdown earlier, and I didn't buy a spare one, I wasn't expecting to have her here so soon. The video has double the amount of views now - 40k, to be more precise, and I'm pleased. My sub count's made it up to 8k. People are finally starting to look at what I've been doing since I was seventeen. A smile spreads across my face, thinking about all the possibilities of what to do next. I can do a Q&A and finally have a decent amount of questions. My DMs are flooded. Perhaps somebody even wants to sponsor me now. Opening my buisness email checking if any sponsorships have coincidentally appeared, there's only one new email. It's captioned "Heathers The Musical: Come audition for us!" Despite the fact it's probably just my old theatre company in wellington sending out a group e-mail, I click on it anyway. There's nothing else there, and I'm bored. Might as well check it out. Then, looking through it, it hits me. It's not anything of the sort.
"Hi, Caramel.
I'm a casting director from New York. My teenage daughter was watching one of your riff-off video in her bedroom when I happened to walk past her door frame, and you were singing when that happened. Your voice is absolutely stunning, I had to do a double take. It's so stunning and wonderful. I asked my daughter what your channel name was so I could look up your channel, because I needed to know more. I was enraptured. Once I did, I fell in love. I've seen each and every one of your singing and performing videos. The video of you as Maureen singing 'Take Me Or Leave Me' was positively outstanding, and then I realized you were just perfect for my upcoming project. I know you'll be brilliant for it.
I've been hired to be the casting director for the first ever Broadway production of 'Heathers: The Musical', and I want you to come out to New York and audition for Veronica. We've had a lot of girls come out to audition for the role and nobody's landed it yet. But I think you've got that special flair they don't.
I anticipate your response, though I understand if you require time to think. However, please let me know by Friday. I'll give you the details once I know if you're interested or not. It's also all expenses paid.
Thank you,
Gillian Macintyre."
....you're shitting me right? This has got to be fake. Gillian Macintyre? What kind of name is that? Curious, but mostly irritated, I google the name. And holy shit, this is very real. She's real. I pinch myself a little bit. Gillian Macintyre has worked on many Broadway shows - Wicked, The Little Mermaid, Matilda - just to name a few. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention.... she worked on MOTHER FRIGGIN' HAMILTON. She wasn't casting director on all of them, but still, holy shit holy shit holy shit! This is what I've been wanting my whole life! To be on a broadway stage! It's at this point that I remember I don't even know the musical that well, and should probably listen to the soundtrack to figure out what I'm getting myself into here.
~Two Hours Later~
It's gold. It's fucking comedy gold. After listening through it once, I needed to know more. And I know that the show was based off an 80's film starring Winona Ryder (seriously. I've been offered the chance to audition for a role Winona Ryder has played. How friggin' cool is that?) has been all around America, it's been off broadway (and played brilliantly by the amazing Barrett Wilbert Weed (also how have I not heard of HER before either holy shit???)), but it hasn't been TO Broadway yet. And fuck me gently with a chainsaw, it's my mission to be the first one on Broadway. I'm so excited I could stick the sun up my ass and use it as rocket power to shoot for the moon. I need to express my emotions about this other than sliding around my kitchen overdramatically lip syncing to 'My Dead Gay Son' over and over. Elise is sleeping, so I can't wake her. She needs her sleep. Oh, of course. Let's call Jon. But I can't tell him something like this over the phone. I pull my phone out and dial his number.
"Carm! What's up?"
"Can you come over, please? Some things have happened. These things are good things for the most part, but I need an opinion on them. They're also exciting things."
"Wow, these things are things alright."
"You get the point. Are you free?"
"Of course. Be there in five."
~ 7 Minutes Later ~
"Oh man, that's rough." We stand in the doorway of my room, watching Elise sleep. I've just gone over her history with Ryan, and asked him for advice. "You're doing the best you can, Carm. You're under a lot of pressure, what with the fangirls and having literally just moved here. You're doing what you can for her. I'd be doing the same thing as you are. You've handled this really well."
"There's also another thing, Jon." I fiddle my hands together. How do you tell the boy you started dating yesterday you've been asked to audition for a broadway show?
"Mmhmmm?"
"I think it's easier for me to show you than it is for me to tell you. You... you also may want to sit down. Prefraby on the couch in the living room. We don't wanna wake Sleeping Beauty."
"Well, this must be serious." he says, in a jokingly-yet-worried tone, walking on
"Oh god, no, it's not a bad serious. It's a very very exciting serious." I hand him over the laptop. "Read it." I say, gesturing toward it. And he does. There's a mix of different reactions I can see his eyes widen once he reaches that oh so special sentence asking me to audition.
"Carm. Carm. Holy shit. You're going. You're auditioning."
"I'm not sure I'm up to it though, especially with Elise here the way she is..."
"This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, Carm. I know you can do it." And as he looks at me with those eyes of Extreme Bluey BlueTM, and some kind of courage spurs in me. He believes in me. And that takes the belief I have in myself and raises it by ten.
"Okay."
"You'll do it?"
"I'm gonna do it." Big smiles spread across both our faces, I nod at him, he swoops me up and kisses me. His touch sends shivers down my spine, and right now, everything seems perfect.
I knew L.A. was the right move. It got me here. But soon enough, it's off to New York for a few days, at least. I'm going to Broadway, baby.
