"You're taking me to a gala?" I question Nolan as I try to peer out of the tinted car window.
"Yeah." He responds absentmindedly.
I turn my head towards him, and notice how shaky his leg is as he pulls up to the valet. I would ask about it, at least that's whats nice Aurora would do, but I don't. I guess bitchy Aurora is still calling the shots around here.
The valet personal jog to our car right away, and open the door for me. Nolan is so going to lose this bet. Gala's are where I excel. My mother use to take me to them all the time. She thought it was a great way for me to meet people in the business.
A long red carpet was awaiting Nolan and I. Paparazzi, press, and people who love to fawn over the rich and famous were kept behind velvet ropes.
Nolan approaches me and we interlock our arms. "Are you ready?" He ask shakily.
I glance at the boy who is usually annoyingly confident with a confused look. Then I realized something.
"Is this your first time at a gala Nolan?" I try to contain my laughter, but it comes out any ways.
He glares at me. "No." He says sharply. Then he sighs. "It's my first time at a red carpet." I can't contain my giggles. Other gala goers by pass us and give us strange looks for just standing there.
"Can you stop laughing at me." Nolan says it more as a command then a question. "Your suppose to be nice tonight."
I try to compose myself. "You're right. I'm sorry." Nolan's attention is way too focused on the people behind the velvet ropes. He can't even keep still he's so nervous. I take my hand and tilt Nolan's chin towards me. "Listen, all of those people behind the rope don't matter. They wish that they could be in our position, so they come as close as they can. They are nothing, so you shouldn't be nervous."
Nolan pauses. "Wow that was offensive to them, and helpful to me at the same time. I think."
I smile at him. "I'm just trying to be nice. Now let's go." I look over my shoulder. "We're going to look weird if we keep standing here."
Walking down the red carpet was a bit of a challenge. Every time I wanted to stop and pose for a picture, Nolan would just keep walking, and awkwardly pull me with him. I tried to saunter down the red carpet, but Nolan tried to speed walk through it. If I look stupid on the cover of People magazine, I'm going to blame it on him.
When we finally got inside Nolan had the nerve to say, "That wasn't so bad." With a grin.
I stare at him in shock. "Are you kidding me? I felt like a dog on a leash that was being dragged from its shit when it wasn't even done yet!"
He laughs at me. "Just follow my lead, princess."
I roll my eyes. Now he's back to cocky and confident. C-C. That should be his new nickname cee cee.
The gala was being held in a beautiful ball room. The building was being help up by beautiful victorian era columns decorated with gold accents. The ball room floor was a brass color with some intriguing tile decor. On the outside of the floor were tables for the guest to eat and drink. There was a stage where a string quartet played old music that nobody listened to anymore. And there were hundreds of people.
Very, very rich people. How did Nolan even get invited to this thing? I didn't even get invited to this thing.
"Okay Aurora, brace yourself. This is the part of the night where this bet comes into place. Please try to be the best you you can be." Nolan begs me with his puppy dog blue eyes.
"You sound like a terrible motivational speaker." Somehow those pleading eyes get even larger. I groan. "Fine."
Nolan nods, and then he starts to walk with a purpose through the crowd. He dodges every rich bachelor and widow, and heads straight towards the front of the gala where the stage is, and stops right in front of a group of people.
Then he clears his throat. "Excuse me." He tells the group of people dressed in gowns and tuxes, and the open their little circle, and there is a man and a women standing there in the middle.
The women was gorgeous. She had pitch black hair flowing down her back in waves, and striking blue eye that accented a dark mole on her cheek. Her ball gown was a simple mermaid styled dress, but it was as dark as her hair and very glittery. Her dress was so black it almost looked blue. The man that was hooked on her arm was a head taller than Nolan with silver hair, and light brown eyes. His suit was obviously the best I've seen that night, and he had an air of power to him. My mother would definitely be interested in a man like this.
"Nolan!" The women exclaims and embraces him. "You came."
Nolan hugs the women back. "Mom." He groans with embarrassment.
She pulls away. "I'm sorry." She smiles at him with a love only a mother could have for her own child.
The silver fox clears his throat to bring attention to himself. "Nolan." He says with a neutral voice.
"Danvers." Nolan replies with the same tone.
They have a little stare off for quite some time, until his mother interrupts by asking a question. "Who might this be Nolan?" The women looks at me.
Nolan breaks his eye contact with Danvers. "Oh mother-" Nolan takes his arm and pulls me in close by the waist. "This is Aurora Kennedy. My girlfriend."
My head snaps towards him. Girlfriend?! He never said anything about being his girlfriend! I was going to protest, but he looks at me with pleading eyes. Eyes that almost hurt my soul.
"Yes! I'm his girlfriend. Lovely to meet you." The enthusiasm in my voice is so unlike me.
"It's wonderful to meet you." The women beams. "I'm Cassandra Richards, and this is Danvers Richards Nolan's father."
"Step." Nolan interjects. "Step-father."
Danvers steps up with a glass of alcohol in hand. "I'm perfectly capable of introducing myself."
"I know honey but-"
Nolan Step-dad cuts Cassandra off. "I'm Danvers Richards, and welcome to my gala, Ms. Kennedy. How is your mother?" He questions with a knowing look. "Well, I hope. I hope she returns back to her company soon, even though it has been doing good without her. I know a lot of people who would love to swoop in and take her place."
It's not a surprise that he know who I am, or my mother, but how does he know about why she's been gone? And is he threatening me?! My temperature starts to rise, and I can feel my breathing increase. Why I outta ring his freaking neck for talking to me like that!
"Mr. Richards-" I start out, but Nolan interrupts me.
"Danvers, we would love to stay and chat, but we have more people to visit. I just wanted to stop by here first."
Danvers frowns. "I doubt that."
"Honey." Cassandra gives him a look, and shakes her head. "We'll see you later, sweetheart." She gives Nolan a kiss on the cheek. "And it was lovely to meet you, Aurora."
"It was nice to meet you as well." I purposely only look at Cassandra when I say this. "Good bye Mr. Richards."
He nods to me. "Ms. Kennedy."
As we walk away, Nolan lets out a shaky breath. "That didn't go too bad."
