Chapter 6

Maddie and Luke sat in the backseat of her car as they parked near the woods. Luke drove a little bit past Black Chapel so they could talk without worrying who was going to see them. He explained that it wasn't much but it's cheaper than coffee at his under-paid job. Maddie didn't mind because it was just them and it gave them a place to talk. Maddie sat next to him, with her legs over his, and his arms wrapped around her. She laid against him as he held her tightly.

She slowly began to tell him everything that happened. She started off by telling him about Olivia Butchwell. She told him about how worried she was about Olivia protecting her. Maddie tried to leave out the part about the letter and Mason; she wasn't ready to talk about that yet. The whole time he stared into her eyes and listened to everything like he actually cared to listen. Surely, he had questions, but she felt bad lying about the truth a little bit. So much for no more secrecy.

"Why would Olivia Brandwell want to kill you?" Luke asked her, as if the entire story of confusing. "Your dad said that she volunteered to guard you tomorrow while you were on some fake date with some guy you never met before. What would she have against you?"

"She didn't like my friendship with Faith De Lawrence," Maddie said quickly. She felt him loosen his grip and looked at her as if he didn't believe him. Maddie raised an eyebrow at him. "What? It's true. She didn't like Faith so automatically she didn't like me, and now following me around tomorrow. I don't know what to do."

"Well, I'm working that event tomorrow," he assured her. He smiled as Maddie put her hands against his chest. "I'll just keep an eye out and see you, and if I see her try something suspicious, I'll just step in with some lame excuse."

Maddie looked at him and rolled her eyes. "You can't do that."

"Why not?" Luke asked her. "That guy you're with tomorrow won't." His body tensed up every time she reminded him about her blind date with her soon to be husband.

"I told you that you have nothing to worry about." Maddie managed to assure him that she'll just keep rejecting them until her dad gave up. Her dad had low patience, so it was bound to be quick. He still acted weird every time, but she couldn't blame him entirely. If the situation was reversed, she would act the same way.

"I'll come up with some code with Nick and Alex."

Maddie nodded her head as she laid her head against him again. Nick was also acting funny a little. Ever since she and Luke started dating, Nick started acting weird around her. When it was just her and Nick, he acted fine. He acted like he was happy to be with her. But when she was with Luke around him, Nick acted like an ass. At one point, he wouldn't even say her name, or even look at her in the eye. "Oh, you mean Nick Lin—the boy who hates me."

"He doesn't hate you," Luke assured her. "He's just going through a lot. He just moved in his dad, and he is adjusting to living as a warlock. It's got to be tough, so give him time."

"That's doesn't mean he should act like an asshole around me," Maddie argued. "He should be careful because I could easily kick his ass if I wanted to."

"Okay," Luke said as if he didn't believe her. Maddie grimaced and he kissed her head to get back into her good graces. Why was it so hard to believe that Maddie could knock someone to the ground? She did it to Alex all the time, and yet people still doubt her ability.

Maddie then began to tell him about the coffee shop incident, before she dumped coffee on Alex. She told him about how Faith De Lawrence was declared dead, and how Olivia Butchwell and Nosy Jenna were acting weird. Maddie wasn't sure how he would react when she told him Jenna's actual nickname. She explained the whole history behind it and how she couldn't be trusted at all. She then went on to what happened with Alex and how big an ass he was. She told him what he said, but Luke didn't act surprised.
