Chapter 24

Maddie stood up in the party hall and looked at the huge crowd that showed up at her father's engagement party. A lot of the guests were both family, council members, and faeries. A lot of people in her family did not like faeries because she had heard her Uncle Martin say they were "manipulative son of a bitches". She couldn't have said it any better, but Meredith and Pride were going to be married into her family. The joy Maddie felt was so indescribable that it was nonexistent.

Maddie walked around the lightly dimmed room and saw the weird architecture. There was an arch that led into the woods and the building itself was like a tent contraption that someone bought at Sports Authority. Count on Maddie's dad for picking the cheapest place to throw a party in. The walls were brown and there were two doors to a room incase people had to talk privately. The floors were wooden and there was a myriad of tables that Maddie didn't bother counting because that involved work. School didn't start for another two weeks so she tried her best to avoid math.

Maddie walked over towards a wall with a shelf full of pictures of the past. Her dad had decided not to throw the party at that place in Junction Boulevard because it was too far away from home, he threw it at the Founders Hall— the place where all the legendary hunters gathered around to discuss how to win the uprising in the 1700's and in 1995. Both of those battles of Black Chapel contained almost the founding families— The Mason's, The Lancaster's, The Rollin's, and other names that weren't bothered mentioning.

Maddie looked at the picture from 1995 and saw a familiar face that made her smile. She saw Evangeline Mason standing in a photo next to her father and Holbrook. She looked so much younger there than what Maddie remembered her as. Maddie had the same hair color as her, but she knew that it was only because of Marcus Salvatore. She missed her mother a lot; her mother would probably be more helpful with her situation more than her father. She would've protested let Maddie keep her weapons, and argue with her father about it. She would've made Maddie dance anyway. She would've been there to help her and come up with some way to protect her. She also would've given her answers about her biological parents, unlike her father who shooed her away every time she asked him about them.

Maddie felt a hand touch her back and she jumped. Out of habit, Maddie immediately turned around and flung her fist to punch whoever touched her. She felt her skin get goosebumps as she turned and saw Luke standing next to her. He dodged out of the way, and she felt her heart beat slow down as she calmed herself. He nearly scared the crap out of her.

"Hey, calm down," He told her, calmly. Maddie put her hand on her chest, trying to recover from her mini heart attack. "It's just me."

"I'm so sorry about that." Maddie lovingly looked up at him and hugged him. His arm around her made the night better. She let go of him and then glared at him for scaring her. "You know how much I hate when you just pop up out of nowhere without warning."

"It's fun to scare you."

"Shut up." Maddie rolled her eyes and he kissed her.

She felt his arm go around her waist as he looked at the pictures with her. She put her hand on his chest and saw how he was wearing a suit. It was a typical suit, but he didn't seem like the type to own a suit. Either way, Luke looked really good in a suit. She was just really glad he was here with her tonight because she's been on edge the entire day. Eventually, they walked away and held hands.

"I'm shocked you did have any wine yet," Luke said.

Maddie's mind didn't even want to think about alcohol because of her killer hangover she had this morning. She didn't throw up, but her mind wanted to explode. "I still have a mini-hangover, so I'm staying away from it. Cat and Alex got us all trashed last night."
