Chapter 15
Alex McNamara hated everything about Black Chapel. He hated the people, the small town, and the sudden feeling of judgement every time he walked in the room. He had Faith DeLawrence to thank for that. He hated The Hunter's Council this town was built on. He thought it was completely corrupt and messed up. He thought his own family was messed up; the hunters were even more.
He sat at Café Express, chilling out with Luke while he worked. Alex knew that it was extremely selfish what he was about to say, but he really wanted to use the karaoke machine at the shop instead of sitting in a dark desolate corner. Luke didn't seem to thrilled to be just hanging to with him. Luke probably thought that his girlfriend was going to be there, but Maddie bailed out because she felt "sick". That was just an excuse for her to let off steam in the training room over at City Hall.
He heard music being played and dozens of poor singers perform an arrangement of songs from different genres. Cat sat with him on the sofa, staring at all the dancers with her milky brown eyes. She had tried to spot Maddie but Alex had told her that Maddie wasn't in town for the day. Cat's main mission was to get Maddie to like her, but Alex knew that it was nearly impossible for someone knew to get on his cousin's good side.
From afar, Alex felt his entire happiness erupt into complete shock. Nosy Jenna had entered the café. She had her hair tied up and seemed to be looking for his cousin. Bitch please, Alex thought to himself, smirking at all the jokes he could've created on the spot. He had a funny one where Jenna's legs were longer then the entire world population. Yeah, that was a funny time. Thinking about that joke reminded him completely of his past when he would come home for Christmas break.
Alex remembered sitting in church, singing hymns with Maddie and Faith. Why his mother thought it would be a good idea for him to go to Sunday school? He had no idea because all he did was make fun of their pedophile of a teacher. He had sat in pew, mumbling something about Jesus Christ eating Kentucky fried chicken—probably wasn't it but he was starving that morning. Anyway, he had heard a tone death pitch coming out of Nosy Jenna's mouth. It was worse than listening to his older brother, Zachary, sing Hello by Adele.
Faith had heard it and started laughing. "I told you guys, Nosy Jenna was secretly a toad in disguise!" Right then and there, everyone in the room busted out in laughter. Faith smirked right away and looked at Jenna. She did her famous smoldering eye look saying "I told you so". Alex had laughed obnoxiously that day, making Jenna start crying while in church. Jenna didn't like him that day forward.
Sitting at Café Express, Alex figured out that times were different. Faith was dead and he had matured. Sure, he cracked jokes and made fun of people, but he didn't do it menacingly. Maddie was also not the person she was two years ago. Jenna— he didn't know about her. Jenna still gave him dirty looks and she was friends with his best friend. Life was just getting more complicated by the second, especially since Luke didn't know about their history with Jenna. Maddie had told him to keep his mouth shut, and Alex completely agreed. Last thing anyone of them needed was division.
He felt Cat poke him in the stomach, making him awake from his daydream about the past. Alex smiled and put his arm around her petite body. As much as she enjoyed it, it seemed like Cat had another thing to say instead.
"Alex?" Cat asked him with shock in her voice.
"No, I'm not buying you coffee after last time," Alex said, frankly. Last time he bought Cat coffee, she spilled it all over herself, him, and his room. His Star Wars blanket still smelled like milk and perfume. That was his favorite blanket.
