Chapter 9

Jealous was not something Luke would describe himself at all. Patient, yes. Caring, yes. Romantic, yes. jealous, not at all. Yet, every time he looked at Maddie with another guy, he felt like going up to that Steven kid and ripping his head off. He felt like pushing that kid aside and grabbing Maddie, and laying one right on her. But, he can't since the council was staring at her the whole time, and so was Olivia Brandwell.

He never understood what went on between his girlfriend and that Olivia person. When he asked her about it the other day, she was vague. Maddie had only say one name—Faith. He's heard stories about Faith from other vampires. He saw her at a bar he worked at in Queens. She seemed nonchalant about everything, yet he knew that she had a darkness around her that made everyone steer clear. He didn't know at the time if it was because of her parents being vampires or something else. All he knew about her was that she loved to tell stories, and she knew a perfect girl for him. Then Faith disappeared and he met Maddie when class started up again.

"How do you know a perfect match for me?" He had asked her that day.

"I have a gift for putting people together," Faith had told him.

After that day, Luke found out that Faith ran away from home and was never found. He never figured out who that girl was. He tried to put the pieces together, but then he went back to school and met the girl of his dreams. Ironically, Maddie was friends with Faith before she was sent away. He remembered looking into her beautiful green and eyes and saying hello to her. She looked just like Annabeth, and he felt inclined to hate her. When she spoke to him, however, he knew right away they were completely different.

Today, the last thing he wanted to do was work and watch his girlfriend go on a date with a different guy. He tried to keep his spirits up around his boss, but he couldn't stop staring at Maddie. Her face when she laughed was something that could not be missed. He felt himself gazing at her, but stopped once some guy came up to him.

The guy had a red leather jacket with skinny jeans. He had long brown hair that was up in a man bun and had a goatee. He had a tan complexion with a square jawline. His scent was very doglike— werewolf. Why he was standing next to a vampire? Luke didn't know, or care to be honest. He was never a fan of werewolves to begin with.

"Your girlfriend's cute," the man said. The way he spoke sounded like he was from Brooklyn. The man stared at Maddie as she was talking to Steven.

"She's not my girlfriend," Luke said decently. He carried a tray and put it on the heater so his boss can heat it up. The man followed as if he was trying to make conversation.

"Whoa," The man said, putting his hands up. "Just making conversation. Cole Masterson, how you doing?" Cole held out his hand, waiting for Luke to shake it. Luke was not going to shake his hand. Cole looked like some washed up wannabe rock star, not someone Luke was going to associate himself with. He already had a washed-up musician living in his apartment. Luke just stared at it, not making any communication with him.

"Working." Luke walked away from him and stared out into the field

Cole followed him towards the pole and caught where was looking. "Ah, I see," Cole said. He stole a beer from some girl and drank from it. "Word on the street is that a hunter was the last person to see Annabeth Magellan before she was burned alive in that fire."

Luke stared at him, confused at what he wanted from him. How did a werewolf know so much about a hunter? Luke looked at him weirdly and shrugged. He watched as crowds of people began to laugh and smile. He watched people trying to cool themselves off on the hot day they had today. He watched young boys play, but stopped once the haunting of his brother came up. Charlie. He looked over at Cole and rolled his eyes.
