Chapter 20
Maddie groaned out of exhaustion as she felt the sun beam onto her skin from the window. Maddie felt her head spin from sitting up, but ignored it as she reluctantly stared at the boot on her ankle. God, it was real. Maddie felt her sides ache a little bit, but fought through the pain to get up and get coffee from downstairs. According to the doctor, she wasn't allowed to really go down stairs, wear heels, or dance anymore; however, Maddie was still going to walk downstairs because she wanted to. She wasn't handicapped; it was just a boot on her injured ankle that would be healed by a warlock soon.
Maddie walked over to her hoodie on her hook by her door, reached up, and grabbed it. She put it on and walked out the door. Maddie slowly walked down the stairs, smelling the coffee brewing in the machine. While at bedrest, Maddie could drink coffee and read the journal from her bed. It was what she had left. As she got down the stairs, Maddie heard voices from her father's office. Raising an eyebrow, Maddie walked closer to see Fiona Royale and her father talking. What are they talking about? She asked herself.
"Daddy?" Maddie called out quietly. She walked into his office and her father looked at her with annoyance. Fiona stopped talking and gave her father a look. "What's going on?"
"Madison," Tyler said calmingly. "Go back upstairs and get some rest."
"Why?" Maddie asked him with confusion. "I was allowed down here yesterday."
"Madison, don't test me today," Tyler begged of Maddie desperately.
"You're father's right." Fiona faced Maddie and let out a breath. "I've put this place on lockdown until further notice. It would be easier for all of us if you stayed in one place, which is your bedroom."
Maddie gave them both a look. Feeling uneasy, Maddie rubbed her arms. "Is there something I should be worried about?"
"Not for now," Fiona assured her. Maddie looked at her body language and saw that she was lying. Something was going on and they weren't telling her. Why else should Maddie be locked up in her room? "Olivia will be over soon to keep an eye on you."
Maddie felt her stomach drop and the thought of her hospital drama came back. Her skin got cold and her throat went dry. Composing herself, Maddie cleared her throat. "That won't be necessary. I can get Luke here if need be, and a billion people live in this house."
"We're on lockdown." Fiona walked towards the office door and shut it in Maddie's face. Maddie jumped and took a step back.
Maddie felt her heart pound as she walked as fast as she could back to her room. She felt her palms get sweaty and fought back the urge to scream from the fear creeping into her throat. Olivia Butchwell was watching her? Olivia nearly killed her two days ago, and now Fiona was letting some psychopath into her home. Maddie wanted to jump out the window to get out of this house that was on lockdown for what reason, Maddie didn't know. She just needed to call Luke and tell him to get his ass over to her house.
Maddie got up the stairs and walked to Alex's room to see if he was home, but he wasn't. Maddie felt her stomach twist as she walked to her room, shut the door, and crawled onto her bed. She grabbed her phone from the table and dialed Luke's number. Her fingers got numb as she impatiently waited for him to pick up. Her ankle began to ache a little bit, making her wince. She had to stay in bed if she was going to get better. On the third ring, Luke finally picked up.
"Hello?" Luke said. Maddie shut her eyes in relief when she heard his voice. Her stomached turned anxiously as she tried to calm herself down to even speak. "Maddie, you there?"
