Chapter 19

Luke Morgan was uncertain about how he should feel as he sat with his girlfriend in the hospital. He didn't even get how this even happened in the matter of hours. This morning, Maddie seemed perfectly fine. She was boasting about her audition and seemed excited. He didn't think that in those four hours at work that she would collapse, get appendicitis, and then find out that her wrist and ankle were sprained. Luke knew that her wrist was sprained by Cole, but Maddie had acted like nothing was wrong. Must be normal for hunters then, she tried to explain to himself.

Cole has Luke on his feet ever since Maddie gave up her weapons. Her only way of protecting herself was gone, and that meant that Cole could easily come after her if he found out about what she was. Luke wasn't going to let that happen to her, even if that meant he had to be around her twenty-four hours a day. She was not going to like that at all.

Luke stared at his girlfriend; she was extremely out of it. Ever since he got out of work at five, she was asleep. She was mumbling a lot about Annabeth and about how she was alive. At first, Luke just thought she was having some nightmare, but he kept thinking back to the day Jenna poisoned herself. Was that girl there Annabeth?

No, he thought to himself. Impossible. She died in a fire over two decades ago. It was impossible for people to come back from the dead. Then again, how could Maddie be in two places at once? He thought it was weird how Jenna explained her story over and over again as if she had rehearsed it over and over again. Luke knew that Maddie didn't like Jenna, but he had to admit that Maddie's theory was far-fetched either.

Luke grabbed his girlfriend's hand and felt how limp she was. She looked peaceful when she slept; it looked like innocence was still in her body. He heard the door open and his body went on full alert. He looked up and saw the nurse come in with a tray of medication. She stared at Maddie, surprised she was still asleep. The nurse walked over to the bucket on the door and pulled out a piece of paper. She nodded her head as she put the piece of paper back.

"I'm just here to refill her medication," The nurse said. She had a very high voice and looked like she was in her early twenties. She replaced the bottles of pain medication as she was humming a tune to an old Bon Jovi song. "It's weird how long she's slept for; normally, patients don't sleep for almost ten hours."

"I'm not surprised," Luke said, not keeping his eyes of his girlfriend. "Maddie likes sleeping."

"So, do we all," The nurse started off. "It's getting late though, so you can leave if you want. By tomorrow morning she should be fully awake."

"It's fine," Luke assured the nurse.

He heard Maddie begin to mumble a name—Cole. The name sat like a poisonous pin in his stomach every time he was brought up. He had been ignoring Cole's calls all day. He was supposed to leave with Cole, but when Maddie collapsed Luke ignored every call he got.

The nurse shrugged and walked out of the room. He sat in the chair and let go of Maddie's hand. He felt the soft blonde curls in her hand, seeing that her hair was no longer straight. Luke heard his phone ring in his pocket and went for it. He saw the devil himself calling and he ignored it. Luke didn't know how much longer he can keep going with Cole's antics. Last time he was with Cole, Cole tried to stake Ben until Luke killed the witch. Luke killed the witch so that his friend would live.

Luke heard two voices from afar, one familiar and the other strange. One voice sounded very feminine and the other sounded masculine. He couldn't hear what they were saying with his vampire hearing. Where he was, it sounded like there an argument going on. Luke wanted to follow the voices and listen in, but he didn't want to leave his girlfriend alone. He got up and stood by the doorway. He stood in the arch as he tried to listen in on the conversation. From where he was, but he still couldn't hear the argument going on.
