Chapter 33

Maddie sat in her with her hair up in a bun and eyes heavy with deep exhaustion. Every time she passed through the hallways, the wailing of her cousins crying over Clemens. The other day, Clemens made Maddie's cousin, Chloe, cry from all the personal questions about Jupiter's Eclipse; it made Maddie hurt when she had to comfort her. The whole time, Maddie could not stop thinking about the conspiracy theory with her father. Luke, Alex, and Hope had to be wrong.

She knew that Hope was itching to talk about it, having very little conversation about it for days. Maddie knew that Hope, Luke, and Alex were talking about it to themselves behind her back, and Maddie didn't care. She refused to even ponder her father as a child killer. He wasn't Caleb.

Speaking of Caleb, it was reported that he actually did escape The Council Sanitarium. She couldn't worry about Caleb at the moment. That was a whole other can to open. Maddie could see Caleb being Clemens's lover, but her father? It was nearly impossible for him to be the lover on the recording. Clemens already had three boy toys, so there had to be a fourth.

"Mad, I know you don't want to hear it," Hope started off.

"Not this again," Maddie groaned.

"Can you just put aside your perspective and think of it from ours?" Hope asked her. "All the evidence points to him." Hope looked at the time and stood up. She grabbed her stuff and sighed. "Just allow yourself to even think about it a little bit. I know it's hard to think of your only parent as a killer, and if the situation was reversed, we all would reason the same way as you; however, this situation is dangerous for you. Stop thinking in the eyes of a child, and start thinking as a hunter. Our job is hard, but that's what we do." Hope smiled and walked away.

Maddie rolled her eyes. Even if she thought about it as a hunter, the theory still made no sense. Why would a hunter want another one dead? That was treason. Her father would never break the law because he was biggest supporter of it. If the Hunter Laws had a fanclub, he would be the president of it. Then again, Maddie thought the same thing about Clemens and look where that got Maddie; a target on her head.

I need vodka, Maddie said. She stood up from her bed and made her way down the stairs. She got down on the first floor, walked towards the liquor cabinet, and stopped when she heard her father yelling angrily on the phone. Pausing, Maddie listened in on the phone call and heard Caleb's name this time. Her stomach tightened and then her palms got sweaty. Relax, it's probably about his escape.

She saw the knob turn and she quickly ran into the kitchen, turned on the sink, and let the water run. Her father walked into the kitchen and stared at her.

"What are you doing?" Her father right away asked.

Maddie shrugged. "Cleaning the dishes." There were no dishes in the sink. "Where are you going?"

"Werewolf rebellion over in Nassau County." Her father then walked away and left the house.

Maddie spied the empty office, tempted to start snooping. She did promise her father that she would stop, but that didn't mean she wasn't tempted. She badly wanted to know why her father kept yelling in his calls. Out of habit, Maddie turned the water off and walked towards the office. She turned the knob, walked inside, and shut the door behind her.

Maddie plopped herself on the desk chair, and started rummaging casually through his draws, mumbling to herself "Daddy is not a killer". Maddie opened the top draw and found a bunch of small Christmas gifts for her and her siblings. Maddie smiled at the gifts, and then closed the draw. She was definitely coming back at a different time.
