Chapter 10
Maddie absolutely with all of her heart hated the woods. Why everything had to be hidden in the woods? She didn't know. She tripped over sticks, bitten by ticks, and she almost broke her angle on some random bricks. She felt the sun burn in her skin as she was dodging through the branches that were abnormally low. She felt bugs crawl on her skin, making her smack herself. Why she thought running in seven inch heels was a good idea, she had no clue, but the heels were never a problem before on missions.
Maddie put her hail in a ponytail as she took out the journal. How could Luke do this to her? He didn't even know where the field was, and yet he decided to be the hero and get that damn stone. What hurt her the most was that he knew that she wanted to find it herself. It felt like he just took her idea and threw it to the ground as if it was some bad report card.
Maddie went to go look at the journal, but stopped once she saw Luke up ahead. He looked lost, which was adorable. Stop that, she lectured herself. She was supposed to be pissed at him, not adoring him. She was going to give him the taste of his own medicine. She put the journal away in her bag and she ran towards him. She took her bag and once she got to him she hit him with it.
Luke turned around, unfazed at what she hit him with. Maddie, still pissed, hit him again with her bag. She kept hitting him repeatedly until he grabbed her arms and stopped her. She wriggled her arms out of his hands and put her bag down. She looked up at him and saw that he just stared at her. He knew that she was pissed at him. She felt him try and hug her as an apology, but she dodged away from him.
"How could you?" She asked him, trying to contain her anger. "You knew I wanted to come and get the stone!
"I know and I'm sorry," Luke apologized. She felt him move closer to her. "If you would've seen what happened, then you would understand why I did what I did. I was trying to protect you."
"From what?" She yelled at him. "The field? Oh, because a desolate field is so scary, right? I've fought creatures scarier than some dumb field!" She whipped her hand across his face. He didn't stop her. He knew that he deserved that. He stood perfectly still as if her slap didn't hurt him at all. She was still pissed because he didn't seem hurt by her slaps. She tried to slap him again, but he stopped her. He grabbed her hand and pulled her closer to him as she tried to get her wrist out.
She found herself very close to him. She looked up at him and felt him still holding on to hand. He held it with less force and finally let go of her. The more Maddie stood closer to him, she found her anger fading away. She tried to be pissed at him, but she found herself more calm than furious. She found herself being wrapped in his arms, making her body get hotter than before. She felt his t-shirt against her face as she felt his arms around her back. His skin against her back made her inside all warm and fuzzy. Giving up, Maddie hugged him back laid her head on his shoulders.
"I really am sorry," He apologized quietly. She felt his breath against her head, and she swooned uncontrollably
"Whatever." Maddie felt his arms let go as she stepped back. "I'm just really happy to get away from that square Steven Holt, and be here with you finally."
"So am I." Luke lifted her chin and kissed her. Maddie put her hands on his wrists as they stopped and smiled at each other. "You have your weapons?"
Maddie shook her head and sighed. "My dad took them. I don't get them until the end of the day."
"Well it's too late to turn back now." He let go of her face and the both of them started to walk.
She took out the journal and faced the woods. She had to say that Luke wasn't far off from where Annabeth hid the stone. The tree Annabeth described was right there in front of them. It was a tall oak tree with black leaves at the top. She walked over and touched the bark. It felt like a normal bug infested tree. She saw a beetle and she glared at it. NASTY. She shivered as she saw something scratched on the tree. It was a scratched heart with the words Ager Mortis. It was some language, but she didn't know what. She stepped back and stood at Luke's side.
