Chapter 50

|Haileys P.o.v.|

"Do you think Carl is okay?" James asks me. I look down on him and nod, "Yeah...I think so. He's strong."

"How much longer? My feet hurt." Lizzy whines. "We have a little while to go." Carol says readjusting Judith in her arms.

"I can take the baby if you want a break." I say walking to Carol. She smiles and hands me Judith. Okay, wow she's heavy. I place her on my hip as we continue on the tracks.

"Look a house." Mika says happily. We walk to the house.

"You guys stay out here as Tyresse and I check the house." Carol tells us. Mika and Lizzy take a seat on a bench as James and I stand.

"Hailey, do you ever want to become one of them?" Lizzy asks. I look at James and back at Lizzy.
What the actual fuck?

Before I could speak a walker comes busting through a door. I pull out my knife as I hand Judith to James. I kill the walker without any trouble.

"Is everyone okay?" Carol asks walking out of the house. The kids nod, "Took down a walker." I tell her.

"Alright guys come on in." She says. I put my knife back in the holster and grab Judith. We walk in the house. It's obvious that its been abandoned for months perhaps years. It was filthy and dust covered the furniture.

"We are going to take a couple of days rest here. Gather more supplies before we head to Terminus." Tyresse informs us. Carol finds some candles and lights them. I place Judith on a blanket by the couch next to Tyresse.

"We will find your brother and your father. Don't worry." I tell her. She just smiles and giggles.

Poor innocent soul. She will know nothing of how the world was before, this is what she was brought into. I don't think I could bring a child into this world...especially since we are always on the run. I kiss her forehead and walk to the table in the kitchen, where the kids and Carol are sitting.

"Look at what I found Hailey." Mika says holding up a doll. It's in really bad condition. I smile, "It's cute."

She smiles, "Do you think we will make it?"

I sit next to James and place my elbows on the counter.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean, will we ever be safe? Will we make it to safety before...we die?" Mika asks. I look at Carol not knowing how to answer this.

"Who cares Mika?"

I shoot my eyes to Lizzy. "If we die we become one of them, one of our friends. It will be fine Mika."

"Don't listen to her." James tells Mika. "She doesn't know what she is talking about."

Lizzy stands up and looks at James, "You are the one who doesn't know what you're talking about!" She storms off into one of the rooms.

"What is wrong with her?" James asks. He gets up and sits next to Mika and hugs her.

"She is messed up." Mika says, "But I'm not like her."

·~Next Day~·

We found out that the stove runs on gas, not electricity. So, Carol and I are boiling water to make tea.

"I haven't had tea in awhile." I tell her. She nods her head, "One night when Ed was drunk...he woke Sophia up. She was about six, maybe seven. After I got him calm and in bed Sophia couldn't go back to sleep. She was afraid he was going to hurt her mommy again. So, I brought her downstairs and we made tea. She fell sound asleep after and tea before bed became our tradition."
