Nothing happens.
You open your closed eyes and see that the knife that was about to plunge into you had not reached its target.
Another knife, parallel to your body, is blocking the hit, and you follow the knife up to the arm, and realize: it's the girl who had saved you. You give her a grateful look.
"Nobody hurts the famous (Y/N) (L/N), the Metal Alchemist." She says firmly.
You jump back into action, picking up your concrete blade from the ground and fending off offenders.
You feel a small pain shoot up your arm. There's a small cut that is bleeding, but you ignore it.
The thing is, the people keep on coming endlessly, moving like zombies that wouldn't die. You wipe the sweat away from your face and try to catch Ed's attention, to tell him to leave. His back is facing you, though, so you stare into his back, going into defense.
Ed, unsurprisingly, does not look back, and you sigh, focusing back onto your task: defending yourself.
You can hear all the moans and groans of the people, and it bores into your ear. Without warning, the building behind you explodes, and you yelp. You're thrown forwards, screaming.
The wall is blown to bits, kicking up a huge dust cloud and smoke; not a good mixture to breathe in. Nevertheless, you're stuck. A frenzy of new voices suddenly surround the air, and all you sense is heat. You see fire as the weak wooden frame of the exploded building catches on fire. There are gunshots and the sound of commanding voices.
You look aside and see that you're surrounded by the zombiefied people. You are surrounded so closely that you could see nothing but the angry faces. It is completely out of control. They are doing disgusting, inhumane things to each other, and you suddenly see an arm fly out. You're suddenly crying, screaming, anything that could get you out of this mess.
You're being pushed and scratched and screamed at and hurt, and the pain, both mental and physical, was suddenly excruciating. You remember all the wrongs and mistakes you've made in the past, all the times you were angry or frustrated at yourself, and then you don't want to live anymore. You don't even know why.
And suddenly, the person you're looking at screeches.
His head snaps back, and you scream even louder. A loud crack rings through your mind, making you recoil. Blood explodes as you see a bullet sprout from the back of his head.
You can't move, you can't run, and neither can you hide.
You hear a voice you don't recognize.
"Please." It says. "Please, release my soul from this agony. I beg you."
And you freeze, eyes widening. Something flashes in front of your face, and suddenly, your neck is burning, but it was a distant pain.
Those words.
Everything shuts down and you collapse, your knees giving out from under you. Your eyes blur over and you start to hyperventilate. The people are getting free hits on you, but you can only watch, as if you weren't in first person view anymore.
I recognize them.
And everything goes black.

[December 5, 1917]
You open your eyes again. It's dark, and you're sitting against a wall. You can barely make out the figure of bodies, on the ground, in piles. The tangy smell of iron burns through your nose.
It's disturbing, but you're mind isn't registering the information.
There's something warm and sticky on your hand. Slowly, you raise it, afraid of what the result would be.
It's blood, the scarlet color burning into the back of your eyes. You stare at it, unmoving, but suddenly, your hand drops away from your vision. And you're crying again.
You're sitting in a pool of blood. Blood. The blood of a human, the blood of someone who was once alive. But you don't move. You can't move.
There's something that's holding you down, mentally.
A hollow feeling lines your stomach, and your throat is dry, but you can't do anything.
You close your eyes again.

[December 7, 1917]
You peel your eyes open. Your lips and throat are dry, and the ground swims beneath you. A heavy emptiness in your stomach weighs you down, and you can't breathe. Your muscles are aching, and they feel heavy, like someone strapped weights onto them.
Weakly, you get up. The bodies are still there, but a rotten smell is riding in the air, making you gag and retch, but nothing comes out due to your empty stomach. Your knee collapses beneath you and you fall, dizzy and mentally unclear from lack of food and water. You whimper, tearing up again. Forcing your aching body up, you stand up and scan the room for any exits, but there are none. You groan in pain.
Suddenly, light floods in. From above. You look up, eyes narrowing and stepping frantically away. You hear voices and you're scared.
Something drops down and someone slides down, wearing a mask and gloves. He is wearing a white cloak that makes him look like a doctor. Maybe he is a doctor.
You breath in deeply, lungs hurting, and sigh in relief.
"Help." You croak.
The man looks you up and down, and looks back up at the hole.
"We've got a survivor here!" He yells in a deep, masculine voice.
Survivor......
You look around the room. If you were the only survivor, then...
You gasp. Ed and the girl....
The man and a team of people grab a stretcher and shove it down the hole in the ceiling.
You take a good look at the ceiling. It is made of collapsed wooden beams and chips, and you realize that it must've been the explosion. You don't protest when the people pick you up, and only gaze emptily at the ceiling.
The people quickly carry you up and out of your dark confinement, and you wince at the bright light.
The sky is blue, the bluest it's ever been, and the air was so clear. You didn't even realize how horrible the air was. They carry you into the back of a huge, white truck, probably an ambulance, and you're taken away to who knows where, probably the hospital.
But not any of that stuff is on your mind.
You're thinking about Ed.
