Chapter 15/The dog fight

The sea plane had passed all the way through the clouds and beyond was nothing but blue sky. In that blue sky was something that made Fox Oswald gasp. The sky was full of the Kingdom's seaplanes, flying boats and airships. Below them was a sea full of ships.

'Oh no, port, port' said Captain Spinner's when he saw the sky almost black with ships.

Captain Spinner's flying boat turned and dive back into the clouds but it wasn't long before they passed all the way through and were joining with the first battle. As they got back they saw a lot of planes had landed in the sea. The pirates looked like they had succeeded and were now bordering the Kingdom's navy ships.

Before Captain Spinner's could do much the huge Empyrean fleet shot out of the clouds. It looked like a huge shoal of black fish falling from a waterfall. This scared the pirates in the water. The pirates began to take off like a flock of sheep running at an attack of wolves. Small sea plane fighters began to attack Captain Spinner's flying boat. Suddenly the flying boats guns started firing in all directions. Fox looked around and started to bury Trixie under parachutes and anything which would protect her from stray bullets. Then one of the four great engines began to throw out fire and smoke. The flying boat had been hit. Fox Oswald pulled Trixie out and began putting one of the parachutes on her.

'We are going to have to jump' he it told her while he put his parachute on.

'I've never jumped out of an aeroplane' Trixie told him.

'Jumping out is the easy part it's not hitting the water hard at the bottom which is the tricky bit' promised Fox Oswald.

'You really know how to put a small girl at her ease don't you?' Trixie said.

'we I say jump and count to 3 and pull this cord' he told her then added 'in that order'.

Trixie could see other pirates pulling on parachutes and rushing to the door.

When she got there Trixie could see was a huge sky battle going on around them. Huge numbers of Kindom's ships began to appear. Fox Oswald was obviously not pleased with her waiting. She felt him push her through the door and she began to fall into the sky. The wind rushed past her ears. She counted to three then pulled the cord. There was a heart stopping moment when nothing happened. Then suddenly it felt like she had become a human yoyo. Trixie looked up to see the large white parachute opened up above her. Then she saw Fox Oswald falling past her very quickly. She even thought he waved and smiles  as he went by.

Fox Oswald's parachute opened and Trixie realised that she wasn't breathing. She took a huge breath and looked around at the sky battle around her. Captain Spinner's large flying boat was diving towards the ocean. The rest of the sky was filled with the Kingdom's seaplanes and flying boats chasing the pirates. More pirate planes were on the water being taken prisoner by the Kingdom. Fox Oswald was underneath Trixie but slowly he came up to her level.

'Well done' shouted Fox Oswald over the sky battle, 'not many kids your age have done that. Can you see the blue cord?'

Trixie nodded.

'Well it's time to pull it' shouted Fox.

Trixie found the blue chord and pulled it ,suddenly a large skirt began to inflate around her. Fox Oswald did the same.

'That will keep you safe until someone can get you' said Fox.

Suddenly the water which had seemed a long way down started to rush quickly  up to her. She landed in the icy cold water but the inflatable skirt acted like a boat and kept her up. The parachute landed gently on top of her like a large tent. She shouted for Fox and then heard a large splash nearby. Fox yelled in enjoyment he clearly loved doing this. Trixie waited listening to the sounds of battle above her. Sitting under the thin white silk she felt the parachute being pulled off her. It was Fox Oswald in another inflated skirt like hers.

'Bet you enjoyed that!' said Fox Oswald being quite pleased. Trixie was not sure what to say and before she could say anything a flying boat approach them. This one had landed on the water and was taxiing towards them. From the tail it was clearly a Kingdom flying boat. Trixie realised from the markings it was the lead Kingdom ship day that they had been chasing. Fox and Trixie sat in the water like two damp cats as the flying boat approached and opened its doors. From the open door of the flying boat the bull headed captain Thomas looked out.

'Ha, you thought you had me but now I have you' he said.
