She's nothing but sparkling
She's nothing but shining
She's nothing but appealing
She's nothing but mesmerizing
Because sometimes,
Nothing is somethingLate August in Cambridge
It felt like the brightest summer for Paul since the last time he breathed the air of Cambridge 5 years ago. He took the key of his grandfather's SUV after he had received a message from Alex.
"At Algiers having breakfast. Come over."
As Paul arrived at Algiers, he already noticed a brunette man which had been grown up with the new look on his face since the last time he met him in middle school. They were good friends but they were both busy with their own stuff, they didn't seem have time to see each other again since Alex and his family decided to move to Massachusetts. Paul opened the door and approached Alex's table as he was having a cup of hot coffee with doughnut and laptop next to it.
"Hey, Bro!" Alex stood up and gave Paul a bro hug.
"It's been a while, huh?" said Paul as he pulled him back and took a seat across Alex. "You've made a lot of changes."
"Yeah, I dyed my hair and I ruined my eyesight," Alex muttered. "I'm a different person now. Thanks Harvard!"
"You're such a bookworm now. Where is the bad Alex I know in middle school?" Paul laughed as he raised his hand to the waitress asking for the menu.
"Well, changing for the better," Alex smirked. "How's college? You seem not busy."
"I'm taking a break because I need to take care of my father's business since I'm the one and only heir of Durand Company," said Paul as he grabbed the menu from the waitress. "Dealing with investors is actually more frustrating than your thesis."
Alex laughed at Paul's joke. It had been a while for them to see each other since middle school. As they were laughing, Alex's phone screen popped up showing a text message.
Paul accidentally noticed the message and playfully asked, "Are you still keeping in touch with Mikaela?"
"Me? I just started a few minutes ago before you came," answered Alex as his fingers typed replying Mikaela's message. "I told her you're here. And speaking of Mikaela, have you dated her?"
Paul rolled his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose, "I never had any intentions to date her. She is only my friend, our close friends but everything has changed since I found out that she has something special with me and I dated another girl which I have been thinking about until now though we're done. Things were really complicated in Paris and I'm still not sure with today."
"Just spill it, man." Alex responded as he tapped Paul's shoulder twice.
Paul told everything to Alex about how he met Lou and the good things he did with her until Mikaela got involved in their relationship.
Still, it was his fault.
Alex listened to every single word that Paul spilled seriously. Then he tried to encourage and enlightened Paul,
"One thing, man." Alex pointed one of his left fingers to Paul. "Your relationship lasted because of lack communication."
Paul stared at Alex as he sighed and Alex continued, "If you could've convinced Lou to speak by giving your confessions about what you've done without her permission, she would follow the way in time. You two are just afraid to speak because you don't want to hurt each other," Alex sighed and smirked. "We're now modern people. No hypocrisy, please."
Paul smirked but he still remained silent and Alex added, "And about Mikaela, she has nothing to do with your separation. I'm not going to sugar-coat the words because I want you to open your eyes wide open, man. Mikaela was actually a victim of your relationship. You can't blame someone to like you."
Paul's eyes widened as he tightened his right hand into a fist and Alex added again, "What's up with the hand? Are you going to punch me? Please, go ahead. At least, I'm being punched because of the sake of truth not lies."
Paul's hand loosened after Alex had said so, "Right, you win." Paul sighed as he wiped his face. "Then what should I do now? I still want her, I always do but in the other side of me, I want to let go of her because I don't want to hurt her anymore."
Alex shook his head and beamed, "I want to ask you something. Why would you let one mistake ruin your two years relationship?"
"I know it's only one mistake but it's not only a mistake, it's fatal and utterly definitely totally unacceptable. I should've not made out with Mikaela."
Alex beamed and stood up, "Wait a second."
Alex walked to the cashier and paid the foods. He went back to the table and took his laptop. Paul only looked at him confusingly without having the urge to ask.
"Come with me. Leave your SUV here, we'll go with my car." said Alex as he left the table.
