Bringing the pastLate August in Massachusetts
Lou just finished her exhibition with Mrs. Smith in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. It was truly an honor for her because her poems were clearly exhibited in the museum. The poem readers were very talented until Lou had to thank each of them for reading her own poem in the exhibition. It had almost been a month for Lou in her summer school program and she just realized that she only had two days remained in Harvard.
Two days remaining. A man in white collar.
Lou just remembered about him. A thought of him was a pleasure and a frustration at the same time. Frustrated about finding out his identity. Lou never talked about the man in white collar that she had been yearning for to know about to anyone. She kept it for herself and she suffered it for herself.
Just like the old times with Paul.
She kept convincing herself that 'what's past is past'. Lou believed that Paul deserved someone better not an indecisive girl like her. She knew she was selfless and Paul was tired of asking her for explanations because she knew that she wouldn't tell to anyone what she wanted but to herself only. As she looked at her watch which pointed at 3 o'clock in the afternoon, she quickly stopped a cab and went to Arnold Arboretum with expectation that the man in white collar would be there any time.
'I never liked someone as much as I do towards him, the pain that I've been keeping from Paul suddenly disappeared since his presence. There is an unexplainable connection between us,' said Lou in her subconscious. 'I have to find him, I have to catch him. I have to know about him.'
As Lou had arrived in the park, the weather was pretty good. She believed it must be a good sign. She walked quickly to the way of the huge tree she used to accidentally meet the man in white collar. Their favorite spot. She was still wearing a fit white dress with black blazer from her exhibition. As she turned her head to the right slowly approaching the huge tree, she saw him. She saw the man in white collar. He was alone throwing the pebbles, a habit that Lou never saw. She slowly walked approaching him and took the advantage that he wasn't occupied by any activities. As she walked approaching him, he turned his head to left and saw Lou standing. His mouth was opened but he quickly pressed his lips and stood up. He looked surprised and couldn't stop staring at Lou. They both looked at each other as if they had known each other. His brown eyes were sparkling and his thin lips were being pressed nervously. Lou couldn't believe that she finally stood in front of him, but however, Lou had to find the proper words to start. She realized it wasn't a fiction where two strangers could easily hug and confess in a blink of an eye. Lou had to start in a normal way though she had no idea what to say and something she only had in that moment was bliss.
"Uhm.. Hello? Are..." Lou stopped when somebody called Lou from behind.
A very familiar voice that Lou never expected to be heard in Cambridge but Paris only.
"Lou?!!" She turned her head back and noticed Paul was running towards her with two bottles of water on his hand. He dropped the bottles and slowly opened his arms until Lou was wrapped around his arms. Paul hugged her so tight until Lou found it pretty hard to breathe, Lou was stiff.
"I missed you so much, Lou. I'm so sorry for everything that I've done to you, I should've not let you go. I can't stop thinking about you. The idea of us separating is killing me, I can't live without you," Paul sounded to cry as his head was pressed on Lou's right shoulder. "I owe you a lot of explanations. Please, don't push me away again."
Lou was still stiff, her mind was complicated with the thought of Paul in Cambridge all of sudden. She wanted to look at the man in white collar behind her but she couldn't because Paul still hugged her so tight. Paul pushed her away from his hug slowly. Lou saw his eyes were about to cry as if he held his yawn. When Paul was staring at her, he suddenly looked at the man in white collar behind her. "Alex? You must have met Lou. She's the girl that we just talked about."
'We just talked about? They were talking about me? This man in white collar is a friend of Paul? What is going on??' said Lou in her thought.
Lou turned her back at the man in white collar. He was stiff staring at Lou and Paul until he didn't answer Paul's question then Paul continued,
"Lou? Please say something," said Paul as he tried to reach Lou's hands.
"What are you doing here?" that question was the only thing she could ask as she inhaled then exhaled.
"I went here to meet Alex," Paul glanced at Alex then to Lou. "But I have no idea that you're actually here too. What are you doing?"
Lou's eyes widened as she stuttered, "Summer school program in Harvard."
Lou was stiff and she couldn't even handle any more questions and explanations coming out from Paul. Paul kept his eyes staring at Lou with hope and apology. The more Lou sees Paul with those blue eyes, the harder she speaks. Lou tried her hardest to breathe. The air was very hard to catch as if she was in the middle of the crowd.
"Lou," Paul reached her hands as he made a circle with his thumb on her palm gently. "I still love you."
Lou closed her eyes as tears uncontrollably streamed down on her face. She shook her head slowly as he tightened Paul's hands then loosened it, "I'm sorry, Paul. I can't talk about it now. It's too sudden."
Lou left them two and ran as fast as she could.
