I wake up the next morning in my bed. Si’las must have carried me to my bed last night. I see a note lying right beside me.

Goodnight.

Only one word sent a shockwave through me. Today is the day Scottlyn gets out of the hospital. I rush out of bed and check my bruise; it is practically gone. Since Si’las will probably want to be with Scottlyn today, I have nothing to do. Maybe I’ll hang out with Josh. Who knows? “Josh you up?”I yell out in the hallway.

“Yea, come here.” I walk towards his room. “What is it?”

                “Do you have plans today?”

                “No.”

“Good.”He says picking up a piece of paper. “Mom and dad are at work, so I have direction to go there. We can make a surprise visit to them.”

“What if they really do work for the IRS and it really is classified?”

“Then we will find out. You ready?” I nod. “Let’s go then.” We head downstairs and make sure that they aren’t here. When we see that they are not, we leave. The IRS office is about half an hour away from us. I get a text message from mom.

You guys have school on Monday.

I don’t text her back anything. “Mom just texted me saying that we have school Monday.”

“Did she say anything else?” I shake my head no. “So what are you going to do if you prove mom and dad aren’t working where they say they are?”

“Ill figure it out once I get more information.” The rest of the ride goes by silently. Personally, I think that Josh is getting too wrapped up in this. It’s not like they are doing anything illegal if they aren’t working there.

When we pull up to the building, we both hop out and go inside. “Hello.”Josh says to the lady at the front desk.

“How may I help you sir?”

“I was wondering if I could talk to my parents, their names are Kevin Clarke and Natasha Clarke.”

“Let me check and see what floor they are on.”The lady says typing away on her keyboard. “Hmm. No one by those names work here. There is not even a Kevin or Natasha that work here.”The lady says when she looks up

                “Did they ever work here?”

“My records say no. We never had someone by those names work here, ever.”

“Okay thank you.”We leave shocked. We get back in Josh’s car and sit there for a few minutes. “What is going on?” I ask him, even though deep down I know that he has no clue.

                “I don’t know?”

“If they are not working there, how are they making money to pay for things?”

“I don’t know. I’m going to ask them when they get in tonight.” We head back home, both of us going over what just happened in our minds. The whole ride goes by with silence.

When we get home, our parent’s car is there. Josh and I both look at each other. “Hey kids. Where have you been?”
