Aubrey hurled herself into her car, her hands shaking as she attempted to jam the car keys into ignition. She had been left alone with too much time to think. She dragged ragged breaths in hastily and drove faster than she should have. Tears soon soaked her face. Just make it home. You can come undone there.
Her parents would be at work for hours still when she arrived home. Her vision was blurred by the unrelenting tears falling from her eyes. She sat on her bed, dragged her legs towards her torso, and attempted to hold herself together by wrapping her arms around herself. Aubrey felt her world collapsing around her, as her thoughts overwhelmed her.
Why would Harry pick you out of everyone? So many girls are prettier than you, smarter, thinner, nicer, better. He doesn't want you. He wants what he thinks you are. He'll figure it out soon enough. Aubrey needed him. She was whole when she was with him. Please don't leave me, she pleaded into the void. Aubrey became hyper aware of her heart glugging away as she fought for air. Her chest heaved but there wasn't enough oxygen. Black spots dotted her vision and she could feel herself slipping away.
Clutching onto her phone, her trembling digits dialed Harry's number.
"Aubrey?" Harry rasped. The dots slowly faded away once she heard him speak.
"Do y-you think you c-could come over?" Aubrey's voice cracked multiple times and she sniffed loudly.
"Yeah, sure of course. What's going on? What's wrong love?"
"I just really need you right now."
"I'll be over as fast as I can. Ok? Just please hang on." Panic grew clearer in his voice.
"O-ok." Aubrey managed. A new wave of sobs ripped through her when she hung up.
Harry tugged at the roots of his curls as he was halted by a stoplight. Distress coursed through him. What could have her so upset? Is she hurt? Jesus change to green already! He slammed on the gas pedal as soon as the light changed and flung himself out of his car immediately after he stopped in front of Aubrey's house. Sprinting across the yard he threw the door open and rushed through the house to find Aubrey sitting with her head in her hands.
"Baby!" Harry exclaimed which caused Aubrey to jerk her head up.
"Harry!" Aubrey leaped from her bed and sprang into his arms. "I'm so glad you came."
"Of course. What happened? What can I do?" I realized I need you. Aubrey locked eyes with him, non-verbally trying to get this across to him. He looked helplessly at her, searching for the cause of her distress but only finding its presence.
"I'm not anything special, you could have anyone. You don't really want me." She slowly backed away from him as she slowly spoke. Harry gaped at her. He saw she honestly believed her words.
"How can you say that?" He looked bewildered at Aubrey. After a moment's pause she answered, "You want who you think I am."
"Aubrey, you don't see what I see when I look at you. I see the way your eyes sparkle when you are passionate about something. You bite your lip when you're focused and they turn the loveliest shade of pink. When you're walking you look down because you're unsure of yourself. All I want is to lift your head and remind you of the way you are. I want to know what you're thinking when you smile at the ground, what you write in your journal, what your dreams are, but mostly I want you to want me like I need to have you. I want to know who you actually are, so show me."
"How can I expect you to like and maybe eventually love me, if I don't love myself?" Tears silently ran down her cheeks.
"I already do like you. I like the you that is who you are." Aubrey stood on her tip-toes to peck Harry's cheek.
She whispered in his ear, "Thank you. That means the world to me." Harry snogged Aubrey in reply.
When they broke apart Harry questioned, "Coffee or tea?"
"Coffee. What about you?"
"Tea." Aubrey giggled. "What's your favorite color?"
"Pale pink. What instruments do you play?"
"I'm quite handy with a kazoo."
"Lovely." Aubrey laughed. They sat on the sofa and continued to question each other, laughing often. Aubrey's previous qualms dissolved for the time being.
