Harry and Aubrey hadn't been apart for the week since the incident. They alternated whose house they slept at. Their need for each other was tangible in the atmosphere. They always found ways to touch each other, even in the smallest ways. Harry would tuck a strand of Aubrey's hair behind her ear. Aubrey would hold Harry's hand under the dinner table. They felt the need to make sure the other was still there. They shielded each other from the outside world. Hiding away for a while was a much more pleasant alternative compared to dealing with reality.

Their parents allowed them to stay home for 3 days after Chaise's death before they ended up having 2 snow days, which lead into the weekend. Harry hasn't allowed Aubrey out of his sight, for fear of what she may do to herself. Aubrey was embarrassed of her break down. Despite her embarrassment, she was glad for Harry's closeness. She was worried about what she may do to herself too.

Aubrey was introduced to Harry's family and they began to get to know each other during the time Aubrey spent at their house. Aubrey felt like a mess, but she tried to hide it from them. She loved Gemma and his mum, who insisted Aubrey call her Anne. Harry and Gemma's humor was exactly the same. Anne and Gemma found it hysterical, to bring up embarrassing stories about Harry. Aubrey attempted to hide her amusement because she knew it irritated Harry, but she always ended up laughing.

Chaise's funeral was planned for that Saturday. Aubrey's mum approached her about it but she begged not to go. She didn't want to witness everyone else's sorrow, she felt enough of that on her own. Her mother asked about it multiple times but didn't push her. Aubrey stayed with Harry and it was one of the hardest days of her mourning. She was glad to have unraveled in her own room, rather than in front of others at the memorial service.

Monday eventually arrived and it was going to be their first day back. There were two weeks until winter break and for that Aubrey and Harry were especially grateful. Harry had left the previous night right before Aubrey went to sleep, which didn't leave her much time to wallow in her sadness.

School was draining. Aubrey closed in on herself. Everyone seemed to laugh obnoxiously loud when they did so. Her classmates irritated her. It angered her that they could move on with their lives so quickly. Lilly had told her that they'd made an announcement about Chaise's passing. She observed that no one seemed greatly bothered by the news. She indulged in the prospect of returning home and falling into bed.

Chaise's absence was prominent throughout the school. Being at school without her, only intensified the grief Aubrey was feeling. The empty seat in every class was haunting. Gloom clouded the passing days. Harry made things bearable, like things could be ok. She felt like she could be happy with him. She did feel much happier around him.

Nights were the worst. They gave her too much time to think, to regret. The separation of Harry and her wore heavily on her during this time. When drastic plans of action unfolded, the remembrance of Harry's crumbled face when he had found her on the bathroom floor was enough to resist them.

It was easiest to push the memories away, but she didn't want to forget. She hoped the incident would become a part of her. She knew she should grow from it, accept it, and forgive. How she was to do that mystified her.

Before Aubrey knew it Christmas was upon them. She anticipated forcing smiles and awkwardly conversing with family members during the holidays. She nor Harry were going out of town and for that she was incredible appreciative. Aubrey was quite proud of herself for discovering an old record player to give to Harry for Christmas. She sought the warmth that the holidays brought.

Christmas Eve at her grandmother’s was comforting. Her whole family being gathered together was pleasant. There was loads of food and presents, but the feeling of being with those who loved her unconditionally was what she enjoyed the most. Love radiated from everyone in the room. She felt like she belonged. It was great to be reminded of her family’s support and love.

The break was restful and peaceful. Harry and her exchanged gifts the day after Christmas. Harry’s smile was wider than Aubrey had ever seen it when he unwrapped his gift from her. “You didn’t need to get me anything. Thank you baby.” He pressed a tender kiss to her forehead. Shortly after Aubrey carefully tore away the wrapping paper from his gift to her. Her mouth fell open and she covered it as she stared at the typewriter he had gotten her.

“How did you know?” He shrugged, smiling at her joy. “It’s even pale pink!” The gift was so thoughtful and it made Aubrey incredibly happy.

“I’m glad you like it love. Merry Christmas.”

*Author’s Note: I adore the song for this chapter. Bon Iver is lovely. The typewriter Harry got Aubrey is included on the side or media tab if you’re using the app. I go back to school tomorrow, which is going to be horrid. I had the best day today though. I made the best cup of tea I’ve ever had, listened to music, and wrote. Any feedback on this chapter would be great! Message me, vote, and comment loves<3*
