The next day Aubrey was out of her study hall classroom before she could rethink what she was doing. She needed to see him again and hear his perfect voice. Aubrey found herself anticipating seeing him in the chorus room since that first time yesterday. It was ridiculous that she was already this attached to him and she realized this, however she pushed the thought out of her mind. It was in her nature to get attached to people and she was infatuated with Harry.
Aubrey curled in on herself and sat on the wooden bench behind the piece of wall that jutted out from the rest, outside of the chorus room. She listened intently, staring blankly at the opposing wall. Goosebumps rose on her skin and her eyes stung as she heard the first notes of the song. Letting the tears flow freely down her cheeks, her heart fluttered thinking of Harry being the source of the gorgeous singing. She listened closely for the rest of the period.
The bell signaled the end of the period and Aubrey wiped away her tears as Harry turned and began striding down the hall when he met Aubrey’s gaze. Aubrey’s eyes widened, her lips parted, and her heart thudded furiously. She realized it was obvious she’d overheard him. Aubrey observed his cheeks flush as he recognized this as well. He gave her a shy wave and a slight smile. She grinned back and tried to reassure him silently. She watched him until he turned the corner. She then rested her head on the cool stone of the wall, closed her eyes, inhaled deeply once, and then rose and walked slowly to her next class.
Marie and Lilly were already sprawled out on Lilly’s couch when Aubrey walked in. They began shooting questions at Aubrey in place of a greeting.
“So you and Harry eh?” Lilly winked at Aubrey from across the room.
“No! I just…no!” She protested. Aubrey ruefully blushed as she responded.
“There’s obviously something going on.” Marie quipped as she rolled her eyes.
“I guess I don’t know what’s going on.” Aubrey replied softly, looking down.
“Tell us what you do know then!” Lilly exclaimed.
“Well…I think I may fancy him….” Aubrey struggled internally deciding whether she should tell them about hearing him in the chorus room. The event had a type of evangelical zeal on it. Finally she decided to just tell them everything.
“I was dropping off a form in the band room when I heard someone singing in the chorus room. It was Harry. His voice is flawless, really very beautiful. I only left when the period was about to end. Then I went back again today. I lost track of time so I was still outside the choir room when he left and he saw me. He seemed embarrassed because he realized I was able to hear him but still gave me a small smile. I don’t think he’d ever let anyone hear him sing before…. Do you think he won’t sing during study hall anymore? Oh my I probably can’t go back there anymore. If he knows I’m there he won’t sing. What have I done?” Aubrey was panicking.
“Relax. Just let it be,” Mar said referring to The Beatle’s song.
“I swear to God if you say that again I will strangle you.” Aubrey said only half kidding. She yearned to hear him sing again already. She was in too deep to turn back.
