"Just a little farther," I tell myself as Sam and I sprint away from the Capitol (of Arkansas). Once Setrukís Ra took Daniela and John out, they were immediately scooped up by scouts and dragged off. The only reason Sam and I escaped was because I was invisible and Setrukís couldn't find me and Sam used his force field to protect him. We both had the same plan: run.
Now, we're sprinting away as fast as we can. We desperately need to replan everything was going perfectly until Setrukís played that dirty trick on us. He completely caught us off guard.
"Six, can we stop now?" Sam asks. He doesn't have to ask me twice. I'm exhausted. We turn the next corner and collapse on the sidewalk.
"That did NOT go well," I say, panting.
"I'll say," Sam says. He takes a deep breath. "We need to get Daniela and John back."
"But how?" I ask. We're both exhausted and the Mogs are preparing to leave ASAP. We don't have time to rest up. "Setrukís is tougher than I thought."
"Let's just think on the bright side," Sam says. "Phiri Dun Ra's not a concern anymore."
"Fair point," I say, "but that doesn't help us right now."
"I think we should get some strength back before we go back there," Sam says, pointing over his shoulder with his thumb.
"Agreed. You got cash?"
"Yep. Most humans carry cash around, even Human-Garde," Sam jokes, using a 'well duh' tone.
"Hahaha," I say sarcastically. "Let's just find a restaurant. Mama needs her food." My stomach growls ferociously.
"Yes, ma'am," Sam says, rising. He pulls out his phone and starts typing something.
"There's a little café across the street," I say, pointing to a building with tables and chairs out front.
"Whoops, I guess I didn't see that." Sam brushes his sweat-soaked hair out of his face and starts to walk across the street. He grabs my hand and I let him guide me across the street.
"You get us a table and I'll order us food," Sam tells me. I choose the closest table to the door outside. The weather is nice and cool and the sky is pretty.
I sit down and finally give in to all of the mental activity that's been fighting to posses my attention. Sadly, my lack of motion at the moment leaves plenty of room for stress and anxiety to move in. I really hope that Marina and Ella successfully made it to the Human-Garde and that there are enough to help us beat the Mogs. If the Mogs win, all hell's gonna break loose and I know for a fact that all of my friends will die and all hope will be lost. I will not let that happen. I hope that Lina, Nine, Eight, and Mark are okay as well. They need a jailbreak, which requires not getting caught. And John and Daniela. I've been trying to not think about what horrible torture they're experiencing. I'm pretty sure the Mogs won't kill them because Setrukís Ra could have killed all of us right on the spot, but I know they were just knocked out because they were dragged away. I didn't get a new scar either, but I don't even know if the charm will still work. I assume it will because it worked when Eight died. If there're suffering because I couldn't save them in time, I'll never forgive myself.
My anxious thoughts are interrupted by Sam coming back.
"I ordered for you something I know you'll love," Sam says. He sets a little stand with the number '5' on it. "A waitress is going to bring us our food."
"What did you order me?" I ask.
"You'll see," Sam replies, grinning.
A few minutes later, a blond waiter comes out with a giant bowl of spaghetti.
