Song: Waves- Mr. Probz
A heavy silence settled over us, thicker than the tension in the hospital room. Wes and I avoided each other's glances while mom and David stood beside my bed, unsure of what to say next. After the realization set in that Wes and I would have to spend the weekend alone together, he stayed as far away from me as possible until I was released from the hospital, but when we reached home, he left anyway.
The next morning, mom helped me pack my clothes for the trip. The doctor advised me to be careful due to the "chance of a concussion"-- which wasn't even possible, considering the story about me falling down the stairs was a cover up for my stupid decisions-- so mom told Wes to watch me carefully. Although we both tried desperately to convince her and David to take the trip, she insisted that Wes and I went since it could be a chance for us to relax for the weekend.
Once I was finished packing, she helped me carry my stuff to the truck where Wes was already placing his stuff in the backseat. Mom handed my bags to Wes, and he threw them onto the backseat before closing the door and facing us.
"Be careful this weekend and relax," She glanced between him and I. "Both of you."
As mom walked into the house, I sighed and climbed into the driver's seat. Wes hopped in the truck and we left the house. Wes and I had agreed to stop at the market to buy some groceries for dinners during the weekend, and he reluctantly followed me around the market. Silence laid thick between us, until Wes suddenly grew annoyed.
"You know, I had much better plans for this weekend. I wasn't planning on having to babysit you and your drinking problems."
I glared as I looked through the meats. "No one ever said you had to tag along."
As I grabbed a pack of meat, I could feel his eyes burning into me, and that continued as I walked towards the self checkout. His anger rolled off of him and made its presence very known to me.
"No, but your mom is worried to death that you'll get more hurt than you already are," He leaned beside the self checkout station, glaring intensely as he crossed his arms over his chest. "I should've told her what really happened. Maybe then she would've been disappointed rather than worried."
"Imagine what she'd do to you if she knew it was because of you," I mumbled, and he leaned closer as his glare intensified.
"What was that?"
"Nothing," I hissed, rolling my eyes. "But it seemed like you were pretty worried when you had the doctors lie to her. Or was that your way of showing your disappointment in me?"
"You should really be thanking me. I saved you not only from death, but also from your mom's wrath if she had known what actually happened," He looked away from me as his teeth tugged his bottom lip, a habit he had always done when he was lying. "Besides, I was the only one there. It wasn't like I had a choice but to help you. Otherwise, I wouldn't have cared."
"Right, I forgot how little you care about me after you so easily broke up with me."
I walked in front of him as he walked out of the store, but I couldn't help but notice the hurt that flashed in his eyes when I caught sight of them. As we exited the store, I waited at the edge of the sidewalk for the traffic to clear.
"Would you stay with someone if you didn't love them anymore?" He asked, pushing the knife straight through my heart once again. I rolled my eyes once again, but the pain was too intense to even give a response to his words.
The traffic had finally cleared, and I glared over my shoulder before beginning to cross. "If that's how you really feel, then you can show me how you stopped loving me but not talking to me and staying as far away as possible at the beach house."
