CHAPTER  21

FLASHBACK

Dr Arvind Sheshadri   attended  to  kalpana  and  managed  to   get  the  baby  in  her  womb.....in  normal  birth position........Raghav was  happy  but   the  birth....was  going  to  be  a difficult   one............Rubina  paced  up  and  down  the   lobby ..  fingers  clenched   so  hard  she  could  feel  the  pain.......
Kalpana  held  on  to  Raghav's  hand  so   tight......her  eyes   beseeching   ,Raghav  to  stay  with  her........
"you  are  going  to  be  okay  sweetie....."'Raghav   squeezed  her  hand  in asurance....that  he  was  not  going  to  leave  her   ........
Rubina    ..came  into  the  labour  ward     just  as     Dr Arvind    examined  kalpana......the  fluid  bag   broke  and  kalpana  was  writhing  in  pain......'
Raghav  felt  it  pull at  his  heart strings.......
"save  my  wife  doctor    ..please  save  my  wife......if  the  worst  happens
"save  my  baby.....Raghav   save  my  baby.....kalpana  was   crying  as  she  pushed  harder ,,,,,.finally  a tiny   head  appeared  and  then  seconds  later   the  entire   body   came  out,,,,,,Kalpana  slumpped  back  on  the bed........Dr  Arvind   placed the  baby  on  kalpana's  chest  and   a  few  minutes  later  Raghav  held  his  infant  daughter  in  his  shaking  hands......seconds  later  kalpana  had  seizures  her  entire  body  was   shaking   so terribly   that  Raghav  and  rubina  was  asked  to  leave  but   Raghav  refused.......kalpana  was in  very  bad  shape.....she  was  bleeding  profusely.........her  eyes  became   lifeless.......as  the  Doctors  and  nurses  tried  to  subdue   her.....kalpana   was  put  on   wires  and  tubes   .....her  small  body  was  slowly  declining.....and  she  was  not  responding.........her  heart beat    was  becoming   slower......Raghav....held  kalpana's  hand.....tears  streaming  down  his  face.....Kalpana  was  fighting  for  her  life.......the  electrocardiogram.....was  showing   waves  that   were  almost   .....straight.........kalpana    opened  her  eyes  suddenly  and   touched  her  baby''
''Sanjana''......kalpana  said  in a tortured  voice  then....closed  her  eyes  .....the   electrocardiogram  went   blank.......kalpana  was  gone..
Raghav  was  too shocked  to  move
"kalpana   my  love...wake  up.....i need  you.....our  baby need.... you...please  wake  up........but kalpana's   eyes  remained  close  ..
Rubina  hugged  Raghav......while  the  baby  began  to  cry...as  though  sensing  her  mother  was  gone
Raghav  refused  to  leave  kalpana's  side  he  sat  holding  her  hand........
Mrs  Gupta   .......we  need  to   carry on with  the  next    procedeers........and  you  need  to  sign   some  papers.......
Raghav......son,.....it  is  all  god's  will.......please  remain  calm.....Rubina  tried  to  console  her  son......while  back in  the  ward.......he  nurses  were   cleaning   kalpana'  body......'
''Raghav  we  are  not   going  to   bring kalpana  back  home.....it  is  very  bad  for  the  baby........we  are   going  to  the  creamation  parlour ........
Raghav  sat   hugging  his  baby............she  was  gone.......Kalpana  was  gone......something  died  in  him..........
Raghav  placed  a little  sinthoor  on  kalpana.s   parting.......and  suddenly  rushed  out.....he  needed  some   air...he   felt  himself  choking.........
the  final  rites  were  done  ........Raghav  sank  to  his  knees.......as   kalpana's  body  was   wheeled  to  the  crematorium..........
Raghav   sat  at  the  corridor  to  the  creamatorium.......his   baby  in  his  arms.....he  saw   people  rushing  about   .......to   visit   their  families    .....some  people  were  waiting  to  claim  the   body  of  their  loved  ones.......there  was  only  baby sanjana in his  life  his  kalpana was  gone all his  dream  shattered 
a  middle aged  couple  were  wailing  that  their  child  had  died..........
Raghav  could  see  only  shadows  around  him......his  vision  was  blurred......the   small  bundle  in  his  arms  began  to  cry...........Rubina  Gupta   tried  to  take  the  child  from  his  arms  but  he   refused  to  let  go.........'Sanjana.....my   child  ..he  wept......uncontrolably..........then   Raghav    slumpped   against  the   chair,........overcome  by  grief
when he  opened  his  eyes  again,,,,,he   was   in  his  own  room...........a  nurse  was  seated  by  his  bed

"get  out.'....he  shouted.........".where is  my  baby'?
Rubina  rushed  into  his  room
Where is  my  baby''he  demanded........trying  to  get  out  of  bed...but  that  gesture  hurt  his  head  badly
Raghav.....the  baby  is  safe  in  the  nursery.........". i  want  my  child  in  my  room.....now..."
Rubina   got  a nurse  to  carry  the  baby  to  him.....
"mother   .leave  us  alone....please......Raghav  requested
Rubina  closed  the  door  behind  her.......at  last......That  stupid  woman  was   not  alive  anymore.........She  had  won....she  had  won
Now   she  can  plan  Raghav's  life  the  way  she  had  always  wanted..........luck  was in  favour   of  her
Raghav   cuddled  his  baby  .....she   had  inherited    ,,,,,her  mother's    good  looks.......;Raghav  wept  again...........the  baby  began  to  make  gurgling   sounds...
Raghav  dialled   Nurse  lalitha's  number  and  made  her  rush  immediatelly....to  his  room
"The  baby  needs  milk  Raghav  sir.....Nurse  lalitha  almost  choked  on  her   words....the  sweet  gentle  Kalpana  madam  was  gone
i  know  of  a  lactating  mother  who  just  had  had  a  baby..........can  i  appoint  her  sir  ,for  Sanjana  baby.".Lalitha   suggested
''get  her  right  away......and  i  want  only  you  to   care  for  my  baby....
Nurse  lalitha   send  the  chauffer  krish  to   bring  the  lactating  mother........to   Mr   Gupta's   room..........

''now  listen......your  job  is  to  give  milk  to  baby........then   you  leave......no  question  asked......you  are   being  paid   well .   no  gossiping   about  this  family.......''Nurse  lalitha   gave  her  conditions    to   the   the   girl   ..
the  young  woman  was  greatfull  for  the  income......she  herself  had  3  young  children  to  feed....her  husband  was  a   bus  conducter...
Rubina  Gupta  sat  in  her  room....with..a  glass of  Champagne. ....she  was celebrating.........everything   had  happened  so  fast   and  here she  was   victorious.........fate  had  changed   ..Raghav's   life...........naturally..........Rubina  will  definetly  give  Raghav his  space....to  get  over  kalpana.....and  it  is   her  will all the  way.........,,Rubina  wished  that  Kalpana's  baby  had  died  too.....there  won't  be  any  trace  of  kalpana  in  her  life ,,,she  had  no  choice     but  tolerate  the  baby...............Raghav  sat  on  the   rocking  chair   ......singing  to  Sanjana  baby.......she  was full of  life........a  silent  tear  escaped  and  it  touched  little  baby's  head......baby  sanjana   stopped    her  baby   sounds  and    her  little  hand  touched  her   father's  cheeks  as  though  trying  to  console   him......she  was    too  young  to  know  her  dear  mama..was  gone..........Baby  Sanjana  nestled  closer  to  her   Raghav.s  chest  as  he  kept  on  rocking  her    back  and  forth,,,,,eyes  fixed  on   Kalpana's potrait    on  the  wall.....kalpana's  face  was  illuminated  by  birthday  candles  and  she  looked  like  an  angel..............tears    fell  again......................End  of  Flashback..............to  be  continued.......evelyn
