Eden
The buzzing of the intercom woke me up from my deep sleep.
Who could it be? Keane wasn't in town.
I got out of bed in a dazed state, still half asleep and walked slowly towards my front door and pressed the button to let whoever was buzzing into the building. What did I just do? I didn't even ask who it was. What the heck? What if it was Vic? I let him into the building myself.
Panic began to spread in my body, I was in full alert. The tiredness was gone with just a single thought of Vic. Why are you panicking? You idiot! You don't have to open the door and let him into your apartment, silly! And besides who was to say that it really was him, I let in? Why the heck do I stress myself so much, and I bet over nothing?
KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!
The loud sound interrupted my thoughts and my heart began racing. I slowly and silently moved closer to the door and looked through the peephole. My eyes widened and I heaved a sigh of relief before opening the door.
I was greeted by an exuberant Megan who threw herself at me with full force. She wore a smile from ear to ear and her eyes were shimmering in delight, "I had the most wonderful first date ever," she said excitedly before releasing me to grab my face with both hands and to give me a big smacking kiss on the lips. I chuckled, "Hello to you too," I replied before locking the door behind me.
Megan went ahead into the living room humming to herself and spinning around like a ballerina. I had to grin at my friend's behavior which was contagious as I felt my mood instantly ameliorate. "I can't wait to hear all about it," I said walking behind her.
As usual, and as I had already expected, she took off her jacket and shoes and went straight to the kitchen to raid the freezer for ice cream, the way we liked to chat with each other. However, before she could get the cold treat out, she saw the bouquet of roses I had left on the kitchen isle in a vase. "Aw," she began in a rhapsodizing voice, "What a super sweet gesture by Keane! The flowers are gorgeous!"
"They're not from him," I admitted. Her eyes widened. "What? What do you mean? From whom? Don't tell me they're from Levi!" She wanted to know. I had to smile at her mention of Levi, as I hadn't even considered that possibility. Maybe it wasn't from Vic after all? I can be so dense sometimes! Sometimes? How about always! I slapped myself on the forehead for my idiocy. Why hadn't I thought of that?
"Why did you just do that?" Megan asked perplexed. "The roses are not from Keane, actually," I began, "And I hadn't thought about them being sent over by Levi." She liked Levi very much after hearing everything about him from me the last time we saw each other.
"Then who do you think sent them?"
My face fell at the question. I didn't want to mention Vic again, as his name would definitely lead to more discussions about him. I looked at my fingers which had been fidgeting with the hem of my tank top. What should I tell her instead then?
Megan came closer and stopped in front of me taking my hands in hers, "What's wrong?" I shook my head, "Nothing. I am just imagining things." Raising my head again to face her, "Wait a sec, I will just give Levi a call to thank him for the flowers," I said before turning around to go and grab my phone.
After a short phone call, I was once again nervous. The flowers hadn't been sent by him either, and Megan heard the whole conversation, so she too knew that they weren't from Levi.
